A few excerpts from an "Idaho Statesman" article.

Boise State?s 58-31 win over Hawaii on Saturday definitely got noticed around the WAC. Louisiana Tech coach Jack Bicknell, whose football team is the defending conference champion, saw the score after his team fell to Rice. ?I was a little bit depressed, to be honest with you,? Bicknell said Monday. ?That must have been an outstanding effort, because I know what type of team Hawaii is.? La. Tech is 1-1 in conference play. The Bulldogs visit Bronco Stadium on Nov. 16.

Nevada coach Chris Tormey also took note of the BSU win. His team plays at Hawaii this week. The Wolf Pack lost 49-7 in Boise last year. ?Boise State flat got after them,? Tormey said. ?(Hawaii) was in a buzz saw from the get-go.?

The Broncos, who play at winless Tulsa on Saturday, got a boost in rankings nationwide. They received 13 points in the coaches? poll, nine more than last week, to rank tied for 36th with Nebraska. They also got a point in the The Associated Press Top 25 poll.

In the computer rankings, BSU jumped from 39th to 26th in the Billingsley Report, from 71st to 56th in the New York Times Computer Ranking and from 56th to 46th in the Massey Ratings. ESPN elevated the Broncos from eighth to sixth in its Mid-Major Top 10, for teams not in a Bowl Championship Series conference. Air Force tops that list.

    Dinwiddie to practice today
BSU junior starting quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie plans to go through passing drills today for the first time since breaking his right ankle Sept. 7 at Arkansas. He will participate in drills that don?t include linemen. Dinwiddie is out for this week?s game at Tulsa. His status for next week?s home tilt against Fresno State hasn?t been determined.

    Turnover turnaround
The Broncos have forced 13 turnovers in five games this season, including eight interceptions. Last year, they forced just 16 and picked off nine passes.

BSU has committed 12 turnovers. The team had 24 last year.

    ?The Art of War?
Coach Hawkins sounded like a professor during his spiel at Monday?s booster luncheon. He ran through several quotes from ?The Art of War,? a book written about 500 B.C. by Sun Tzu. He used the quotes as inspiration for his team Friday night.

Among them was this jewel: ?Our mission is to create and exacerbate internal discord.? Hawkins said he talks to his team about ?spreading the bench? ? beating a team so soundly that its players isolate themselves.

The Broncos accomplished that goal Saturday. ?At one point in the third quarter,? Hawkins said, ?David Mikell came over to me and said, ?Hey, coach, check it out ? we spread the bench.? Those moments, as a coach, are really what you live for.?

    Quick hits
Hawkins said Sunday?s ?correction review? process at practice was the shortest he has had as a coach.

BSU blitzed Hawaii on 24 of the first 31 plays. ? Rice quarterback Kyle Herm was the WAC offensive player of the week.
