For those who moan and groan, here's some food for thought.

It takes 10-15 million for a football program to break INTO a consistent top 50 program.

Of those complaining about JB and the disappointing season, WHO will stand up and put some MEGABUCKS into the till to come up to this level?

Until then, AVERAGE play will be commonplace. Above average play by AVERAGE players will need help from above.

I am seriously considering whether we should have joined the Sun Belt Conference. It would save money and just about guarantee bowl games (like Marshall). Everyone knows the MAC sucks, but Marshall still gets respect. Maybe we should step away from "the big money games" and play more regional (bus trip) games and play in a conference we could dominate. Maybe we bit off more than we could chew by joining a conference whose members have MUCH MORE MONEY than we do. Baby steps.....we will get there one day.

    T,

Too many people placed the bar a bit too high. The WAC is nice, and nicer than the BElt, but MONEY talks and BS walks.

Recognizing a REALISTIC potential of Tech's contibution to the league has been most difficult for some .... bordering perhaps in dreamland.

But, what's wrong with dreaming ... if the alumni will do their share and come up with the BUCKS to get to that next level., who knows,it COULD happen. But not overnight and NOT with the funding currently available.

    Complete Bull&%* post

I have watched NAIA teams execute better, play harder and have team discipline.

Tech has no marking of a "team". Our coaches have allowed our players to become premadonnas. We need a hard core head coach that will not put up with BS from players. If a player has an attitude, bench his ass.

The head coach should control the team. Our players control the head coach.

    NO LEADERSHIP

Money would certainly help attract and retain quality coaches. There is no doubt in anyones minds, I don't think, that we are way behind when it comes to the checkbook.

But money doesn't demand discipline, coaches do. Money doesn't execute game plans, players do. Money doesn't create desire, heart does. I haven't seen a lot of discipline lately. I haven't seen games plans executed lately. I don't see a lot of heart or desire right now. I see confusion and I sense "individual" instead of team.

There are a lot of problems that money won't necessarily fix right now.

"The head coach should control the team. Our players control the head coach."

Well, then, drive on over each day and do it better. Call Oakes and tell him you have the answer to ALL the problems.

Ummmmm, BTW, how do the players CONTROL the coach? (just wondering)

I know that I would have 11 players on the field that did what the *%&# I told them when I told them.

If you give me lip or cop an attitude, your butt is benched. If you drop a pass, you get benched. If you miss a block or tackle you run till you puke.

If you miss an assignment you run and do pushups.

A leader MUST have the respect of his troops by fear, devotion or both. Bicknell & has no respect.

My team would make fans proud even in a loss because we would play balls out for 4 qtrs but with discipline. Execution would be sharp and crisp. Mentally we would be prepared for any situations that might arise.

I would know clock management, unlike your people you defend.

Well, you seemed to have left out the fact that our players AREN'T blue chippers who beat our doors in to get here.

We have AVERAGE talent that makes or breaks a coaching staff of our calibur (and potenital calibur). THEY are the ones on the field who EXECUTE or DON'T execute.

Money would allow us to recruit nationally and not regionally. But we could go 11-zip every year and NOT advance. Being a non-BCS school KILLS us at EVERY junture. So we go 11-0 every year. We get the LIBERTY bowl and 1.3 to 1.8 million while VANDY sits at home and does NOTHING and draws 8-9 million?

Bear Bryant could come back here from the dead and nothing would change. Bobby Bowden is the ONLY man in history to climb that mountain .... and stay there.

Sing along, guys. The car may not be running all that well but there is nothing wrong with the radio!
I am extremely happy that we have dependable computerized radio for out-of-state fans this year!
I don't know what is wrong but suspect that it is a combination of most things people on this board have focused on in recent weeks.
Some of it is confidence, healthy confidence. Maybe some of our players appear cocky. That doesn't mean the cocky ones have any more real confidence than the quiet ones.
Fans, especially those who put up the seriously big money to support the program, have a right to expect more from the team this year. However, negative VIBES really do affect things.
That is the reason I don't participate in the bad-mouthing of the team or coaches. I do not understand the problem; therefore, I cannot accurately analyze. For me to write something negative about a situation I have few facts on, would violate every scholarly and journalistic, religious and ethical belief ever inculcated in me by teachers, editors, preachers and philosophers.
Do I believe I could improve the situation if I were in a position of power. Certainly I do, because I am not unlike some people who offer a lot of advice and/or criticism here. Fortunately, I don't have to prove it. Football coaches make many times as much money as I do because they know something I don't know. They are much more motivated to win than most people who post here, because most of them can't move to our town and take our jobs, not even the poor-paying jobs some of us have. They are specialists and we are specialists in our own world. EVERYONE KNOWS SOMETHING YOU DON'T KNOW.
If we could read the thoughts of all the players and coaches as we read one another's on this board, maybe we could actually suggest ways to help.
Yes, we need to raise vast sums of money. However, even the unbelievably wealthy programs don't win them all, even at home!
"Despite amassing more than 500 yards in total offense, Arkansas dropped a 29-17 Southeastern Conference decision to Kentucky before a crowd of 61,573 on a rainy Saturday at Reynolds Razorback Stadium.
The Hogs, who slipped to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in the SEC, wasted a 182-yard rushing performance by tailback Fred Talley.
Sparked by Derek Abney’s 86-yard punt return and a pair of Arkansas turnovers, Kentucky seized control by scoring 20 second-half points."
The largest newspapers in Arkansas will give the Hogs more ink and space than any other team in the world gets from any two newspapers, but the loss is simply another loss.
Guess, what? The crowd will be much larger in HOG City next week when Old Miss visits. And the tailgating will be as much fun and the money will flow.
You have to enjoy the process.
I hope someone who watched Tech's game will write a lot about the high points of the game.
I wish I had been able to get off work to go, partly because I imagine just a little more fan support could have helped the Dawgs pull out of the slump but more because it is really not easy for me to get to see a Tech game and value it each time, win or lose.

That's Bull$hit hound dog! It doesn't take even AVERAGE players to beat an 0-7 SMU team & an 0-whatever RICE team. It takes players with guts & balls, who dive for passes & not quit on routes. It takes coaches who can change gameplans, adapt & overcome, and have the balls to jerk a player out & tell him to sit his ass on the bench until he can do better! We have the talent to beat any team in the WAC, we just don't have the leadership, guts, and want-to to make it happen!

Unfortunately you are completely correct, RXDawg, our players are executing way BELOW their potential. It's pretty sad to watch. Where is the Jack Bicknell who was so passionately aggressive in 1999 that he broke his fist against a table?

"I don't have any answers" is not an acceptable response when your last two losses were to 0-4 Rice & 0-7 SMU. Even Navy beat SMU 38-7 at Ford Stadium this year! These teams do not even have equivalent talent to ours, but they have a superior DESIRE to win!

Unfortunately we have no more winless opponents on our schedule this year. So if we "have no answers" for winless, demoralized teams, we certainly have no answers for teams who believe that "Football is WAR- we will attack & defeat our opponents mercilessly".

As for our "comeback" against SMU today, the ~2k-3k Louisiana Tech fans should be credited with not letting our team quit. The players didn't just wake up all of the sudden in the 4th quarter and decide that it was time to show some backbone. The passing game was ineffective again- dropped passes, poor throws,... while Joe Smith averaged 10 yards per carry.

There are answers, and they were painfully obvious over the last 3 weeks.

FIM ... you've got the right idea! I want a coach like Gen. George S. Patton! Recalling a scene from the movie when he takes command of Allied North African actions, Patton ... the Allied headquarters is in shambles, the soldiers are lazy ... Patton put the fear of God in them!

THAT IS WHAT WE NEED! And for crying out loud, with that done, the rest of the things will probably fall into place! No more of these crappy short pass play calling ... BIG, BOLD, and DARING calls. No more bad playing without repercussions that won't be recalled on the practice field even as early as Sunday afternoon. Our practice field has a hill on it ... make those players learn every blade of grass on it! You throw a blatant interception when you could have thrown the ball away or someone else was completely open ... you run! (borrowing from FIM) You miss a block, you miss a tackle, you run!

Ok, I'll quit now! WHERE IS THE GEORGE S. PATTON of the NCAA ... HIRE HIM! I pledge to significantly bump my menial CHAMPS contribution if it will get us a strong disciplinarian!

I'm wondering if I need to bring my "Hit the Road Jack!" sign to JAS next week!
