I have heard that Solomon Brown, a point guard, is coming to visit Tech this weekend. He played one year at Iona and is sitting out this season and looking for a place to transfer to.

Here's an exerpt from an email his former AAU coach sent me-

He started off his high school career at traditional powerhouse Mater Dei HS (Santa Ana, Calif.)., but transferred for his 10th grade year to Savanna HS (Anaheim, Calif.). He was a two-year starter for Savanna, before applying and getting accepted to prep school powerhouse St. Thomas More (Oakdale, Conn.). He was at St. Thomas More for two years (he repeated his junior year at STM), during which time they won the NEPSAC (New England Prep School Athletic Conference), Class A championship both years. The NEPSAC is considered the best high school basketball conference in the country (for example, MCI-Maine Central Institute, Winchendon, Worcester, etc. many powerhouses). He started his last season at St. Thomas More and was named MVP of the Class A post-season tournament, which STM won. He also attended the prestigious adidas ABCD Camp in 2000.

Solomon committed very early to Iona (they'd been recruiting him for awhile). If he had waited, there was some definite interest from Big East, and other high-major conferences.

He's wiry, and very fast (very fast from free throw line to free throw line). Solomon can really push the tempo and he can distribute the ball. He can also shoot the jumper and he's also very good getting the outlet pass on the break, pushing the tempo and (if it's there) nailing the 15-foot jumper off the dribble. He's got a good handle, can penetrate and can find people. Good passing skills. He's a good shooter who can get streaky hot from the perimeter. And he generally makes good decisions.

He started most of the games last season for Iona, averaged something like 29 minutes per game and played very well for a true freshman.
He played in 30 games, played 878 minutes (29.3 mpg), averaged 7.8 ppg, 3.8 assists (versus 3.3 turnovers---and in Solomon's defense, Iona wasn't very good last season, lots of dropped passes resulting in turnovers for him), 2.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals.

Against Hawaii of the WAC last season (December 2001), Iona lost 67-56. Solomon played 26 minutes, was 2 of 6 shooting overall, 2 of 4 from 3 point range, had 1 rebound, 1 steal, 4 assists and 3 turnovers.

Solomon will not play this season (no JC ball) and he'll have three years of Division I eligibilty. He's also a pretty good student (carried a 4.0 gpa for much of his tenure at STM).

I'd have to say those are pretty good numbers for a true freshman against good competition as well. Iona has made it to the NCAAs quite a few times.
