See the article on the start page at www.latechbbb.com about the coaches' responsibilities concerning the academic side of athletics.

    >>>"It's an extra headache given the manpower we have," said Tech offensive coordinator Conroy Hines, who also doubles as the team's academic counselor/liaison...

So football players wanting to be eligible for the football season, must pass four hours during the spring quarter. However, since Tech's classes are divided up in three-hour increments, it means passing six hours, or two classes, just like schools on the semester system.<<<

I guess this article answers the BB&B debate regarding our academic staff level with the comment about most Div. 1A coaches getting progress reports from their academic staff. Our offensive coordinator IS our academic "staff".

Also, with Tech being the only Div. 1A school still utilizing the quarter system, basically our athletes must pass the same # of classes in the spring as all other 1A schools' players must pass over a semester.

With the rule change next year our football players can become immediately ineligible for the last 2 football games of the season plus a bowl game. Our basketball players have 2 opportunities to become immediately ineligible during the season! Schools on the semester system will not have these eligibility issues since a semester typically covers the entire season.

At some point Louisiana Tech will need to choose between the obsolete quarter system or Div. 1A athletics.

Auburn and Georgia used the quarter system until a few years ago.

I know that some Div. I-AAA (non-football) schools such as South Alabama still use the quarter system.

It was sometimes difficult to squeeze in everything from a semester (18 weeks) into a quarter (12 weeks).

The semester system would benefit all students.

Will get you a finish in the bottom half of the race 9 out of 10 times...

    It's not a coaching problem, it's not a player problem -

It's an administration problem and a fan (or lack of support) problem...

When we don't have money in the budget for NECESSARY items such as elbow pads and ankle tape - odds are we can't afford to pay the salaries that will KEEP the good coaches or attract the good coaches...

And for those like LPB who think we have the facilities that are comproable to our conference mates - let alone the A&M's and the Clemson's - come out from under that rock, it is fixing to be 2003...

Boy that extra $50,000 from CLC to the Athletic Dept sure would be nice.... Thanks Dan

And oh yeah, that extra $10,000 from parking would be a nice kick in the butt too....

And how can I forget all the $$$ being made through the season tickets on the West Side...

    DW,

    Thanks for making that point!!!

I was wrong by 10%!!! I said only 20-40% of Conroy's time was spent as an "academic counselor"... Apparently it's 50%!! 8O

We are at a crossroads and the very impassioned people on this board that want to cut the throats of "stupid" coaches and "idiot" players, need to direct their concerns to the 16th floor of the Wyly Tower... As Dwayne said, that is where our problems lie!!!

Again, what we have accomplished in athletics over the last 10-12 years is phenominal when compared to the teams we are competing against... I don't know how much longer we can sustain that, if somebody(Danny boy)doesn't make a concerted effort on behalf of our athletic endeavors....

The quarter system gives athletics a better chance for good graduation rates because these students can adjust their hours depending on the time of the year. My daughter is going to graduate on time in 4 years without summer school . Since she could ease off the load at peak competion times and take more during the off season, the quarter gave her more flexability.

The quarter system is easier on students. Classes finish in a shorter amount of time, but you take fewer classes at one time. I prefer the quarter system.
