That’s crazy. Before you give Safford a big pass based on 1 walk and one throw you should look at his season stats from last year. He is a weak link. Why didn’t you comment on Evans? I gave two options who are each more capable and reliable.

looks like evans has been really good in his limited appearances so far. too bad he's playing behind the best defensive catcher in the conference. i haven't been able to watch any games yet -- has evans played at first base? is he any good there?

Look at the number LOB for Army. But it’s no big deal.

It’s not flashy, but if he gets on base, scores, and makes a key defensive play or 2…..just like he did tonight, then he is a viable option every game.

defense got it done tonight, and safford's walk was big. hard to criticize when we keep winning (i said hard, not impossible -- you guys are really good at this criticism thing). competition keeps picking up from here. almost everyone left on our schedule is better than almost everyone we've already played.

I’m just a big believer that huge numbers LOB will get you beat a lot against good teams. We are a decent team. Army couldn’t push guys home from 2nd or 3rd on multiple occasions and it got them beat. LOB may not be as important if you score 6-8 runs and leave 10 on base. But not scoring or scoring 1-2 runs and leaving a boatload on base doesn’t bode well. Some don’t think LOB matters at all.

You do realize that a walk is a pitching failure, right? The other alternative is to swing at bad pitches and strike out.

i don't think anyone disagrees with that. the whole point in the other thread is that lob is not a meaningful stat on its own. obviously if you're leaving a lot on and not scoring runs, then that is indicative of a problem, but if we score 10+ runs, i don't care how many got left on.

I guess I interpreted the conversation differently. I was probably wrong in my understanding. It seems like LOB is a huge stat for us because we seem to have low run totals with high LOB. So, itself or not, it’s a bad stat.

    Re: Sugarland

As I’ve said a number of times over the years LOB only matters if men were left on 2nd or 3rd AND arrived there with zero or 1 out. The misleading stat includes men left on who arrived there with 2 outs. It also includes men left on first which is the worst part of the stat. How rare are two out rallies? IMO a fan should not get upset about LOB the general stat because each LOB is different.

Big win BTW. It was a great game.

This was an important win and a quality one too considering how it played out. Tech probably wouldn’t have won this game last year. The Dawgs’ maturity and tenacity it showing.

I like the shutout. We all know you win (consistently) in baseball with pitching and defense.

    Keep it rolling Diamond Dawgs!
