Byrd defeated Catholic-BR 24-7. They will now host Rummel in the 3rd round of the LHSAA 5-A playoffs.
Also, Evangel defeated Huntington 54-7. They will play at Destrehan. Airline fell to Hahnville. West Monroe defeated Natchitoches and will play host to Slidell.

In 4A, Neville and Bastrop are still alive.
If Byrd and Evangel both win, they will play to see which team goes to the dome. Hopefully that game would be at Independence. The game would probably attract more than the Tech-UTEP game.

BATON ROUGE - Whatever problems Byrd has had winning football playoff games in the past are now just that.
Past.
The Yellow Jackets offense pounded fourth-seeded Catholic of Baton Rouge for four quarters and the Jackets defense gave them next to nothing for the same duration as Byrd advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Class 5A playoffs with a 24-7 win on Friday at Memorial Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets controlled both lines of scrimmage, outgaining the Bears on the ground 264-33.
"We came out there and hit them hard every play," Byrd senior defensive lineman Matt Goorley said. "I think we're stepping it up in the playoffs. We're just hyped up about going far."
Next for Byrd is Rummel, which defeated Sulphur 27-7 also on Friday.
Against Catholic, it was a slight switch in the Yellow Jackets' offense which threw off the Bears defense.
"We put in some new stuff that they hadn't practiced for this week," fullback Norman Bailey, who scored Byrd's first touchdown on a 33-yard run. "Once they adjusted to that, we went back to what we usually do. We started with some tight end motion that made them shift down and opened things up for us."
As did the Byrd offensive line. Both Bailey's run and a 36-yarder by Brent Smith which put the Jackets ahead for good at 14-7 at 3:41 of the second featured the backs breaking through big holes into wide open field.
Smith credited the entire line - particularly a block by Lincoln Coleman - for his scoring run.
"I was looking at the end zone and before I knew it, I was there," Smith said.
His run was set up by a Brad Petree interception which gave Byrd the ball at midfield. Petree let the intended receiver pass him on the play and then lept and grabbed the floating pass.
"I saw the running back coming out of the backfield and saw the quarterback's eyes," Petree said. "He lobbed it up like a duck, and I came down with it."
Another interception - this one by Renaldo Thompson early in the fourth quarter, set Byrd up at the Catholic 39. Bailey scored his second touchdown at 7:35 of the period on a 21-yard run.
It was a complete turnaround for the Jackets, who came out and watched the Bears march down the field through the air.
Catholic put the Jackets on their heels quickly, with Brad Pevey completing a 30-yard touchdown pass to Tasmin Knockum for a 7-0 lead.
The rest of the half belonged to Byrd, as Yellow Jackets coach Mike Suggs ran the ball with alternating running backs and kept the Bears guessing. By halftime, Smith had 100 yards on six carries and the Jackets had 196 as a team.
Byrd scored on two big running plays resulting from big holes created by the offensive line. Bailey broke through from 33 yards out to tie the game at 7 just four plays after Catholic had taken the early lead. His run had been set up by a Smith 44-yarder on third-and-11, and Smith added his own score at 3:41 of the second from 36 yards following a Petree interception.

As Catholic High claimed a series of close football victories, Dale Weiner set a goal: Weiner wanted more games that didn't require late dramatics.
The Catholic High coach finally got one of those games on Friday night. Unfortunately for Weiner, Catholic wasn't the team that delivered a knockout punch.
C.E. Byrd High of Shreveport used its speed to score on big plays and stifle the Catholic offense while running away with a 24-7 victory in a Class 5A regional-round playoff game held at Memorial Stadium.
"I told my guys there's no disgrace in losing to a team that plays well," Weiner said. "I thought Byrd played very well. Tonight, we just got beat by a better team."
With the victory, Byrd (9-3) advances to play Archbishop Rummel of Metairie (11-1) in the quarterfinal round.
Brent Smith led a Yellow Jackets offense that piled up 226 rushing yards. Smith rushed for a game-high 118 yards on 12 carries, including a 36-yard TD run. Norman Bailey added 89 yards on 13 rushes and scored two TDs for the winners.
On the flip side, a swarming Byrd defense limited Catholic (10-2) to just 23 yards rushing and 158 yards total offense. Catholic's 1,000-yard rusher Tasmin Knockum was held to 12 yards on 13 carries.
"It was a great win for us," Byrd coach Mike Suggs said. "I thought our defense played well. We let them get that early touchdown, but after that we pretty much shut them down.
"We got the lead and then our defense just didn't give up much. When we got a chance, we were able to put them away."
Catholic got the game's first touchdown on a 30-yard pass from Brad Pevey to Knockum and took a 7-0 lead less than four minutes into the game.
Byrd controlled the rest of the half and built a 17-7 advantage. The Yellow Jackets used their speed to make a big difference on both sides of the ball.
A 44-yard run around right end by Smith set up Bailey's 32-yard run up the middle that tied the game at 7-7 with 7:16 remaining in the opening quarter.
An interception by Brad Petree gave Byrd the ball back four plays later. From there, Smith broke loose for a 36-yard TD run, giving the Yellow Jackets a 14-7 lead with 3:38 left in the first period.
The Yellow Jackets added a 28-yard field goal by Pete Dupee in the closing seconds of the half to make it 17-7.
In the first half Byrd's defense hounded Catholic's offense. Catholic had eight negative plays for minus 24 yards.
The Yellow Jackets limited Knockum, a 1,000-yard rusher, to minus-6 yards rushing in the half. Brandon Harrison leaving the game after one series after re-injuring an ankle didn't help.
"Shutting down Tasmin was our goal," Byrd lineman Billy Hargrove said. "When they lost the other guy (Harrison) I think that hurt them. We were able to focus even more on Tasmin. We just swarmed to the ball."
Catholic made it past the 50-yard line only twice in the second half. Both times the Bears turned the ball over on downs.
Renaldo Thompson's fourth-quarter interception set up Byrd's final score -- a 20-yard TD run by Bailey with 7:35 remaining. That score made it 24-7 and put the game out of reach.

Watched WM/Slidell. Slidell was 12-0 :lol: . Pretty pitiful for a 12-0 team though. They wouldn't have showed with the schedules played by N.La. 5A teams. Who the heck to those folks play down there? Do they have 5A football in South Louisiana?
Just back from the Rummel-Byrd game. Wow! what a heart stopper that one was.
Have to say that Byrd is the better team. Rummel made some plays when they had to, and Byrd made some mistakes. Was NOT impressed at all with Rummel's efforts tonite. Team looked pretty ordinary, didn't think the Rummel coaches called a good game either....oh well, a "w" is a "w" especially at this point in the season.
The Rummel cheerleaders still use the old (very old!) Super Ants cheer! That brought back some memories. Those kids were NOT even born when that cheer was first used!
