As many readers pointed out, I overlooked the fact that any team chosen to host a sub-regional is automatically placed at that site regardless of seed. Ultimately, that means that a lower-seeded team could be hosting a higher one in a first- or second-round game.
On the surface, it might seem unfair and something that was avoided in past years when the opening-round sites were chosen after the field was established and the highest seed in the sub-regional was given the option of playing host. That's the tradeoff for pre-determined sites. Considering the large number of NCAA staff and individual university personnel needed to run tournament games, it's the only realistic solution. However, it also could create some interesting and confusing scenarios for the committee, at least one or two of which might be the subject of a future column.
