News Release just Posted: Louisiana Tech Standardizes its Colors

Ruston -- True-blue Louisiana Tech fans will soon need to change colors -- to some extent.

In an effort to standardize its colors, the university is phasing in a return to the tradition of its early years with university-wide use of royal blue and red.

Royal blue will replace the lighter Columbia blue, which has been used in some applications since the 1960s.

The change was approved recently by Tech's Administrative and Planning Council. It ratified the recommendation of an ad-hoc committee of administrators, alumni, faculty, staff and students appointed to review the school's use of colors.

Matt Napoli, Student Government Association president and a member of the ad-hoc committee, endorsed the decision.

"The colors were confusing because students would buy shirtssupporting the football team, but they wouldn't match the band or the Lady Techsters," he said. "The new colors, a strong blue and classical red, will be great for the university."

Research by the committee showed that the baseball, football and men's basketball teams already use the darker blue in their uniforms, while the Lady Techsters' and marching band uniforms feature Columbia blue.

Uniform use of royal blue will emerge as the transition occurs over a maximum of three years. According to the approved recommendation, "Stationery and printed materials should begin immediately to use only the official school colors; uniforms and other items of uniform clothing should use the official colors as soon as possible."

By making the change, Tech returns to its first official colors, established two years after it was founded.

In 1896, Col. A.T. Prescott, president of what was then Louisiana Polytechnic Institute, announced the selection of red and blue -- representing courage and loyalty, respectively -- as the institution's colors.

That's exactly what I was wondering. Does this mean that the basketball court will get repainted and we can lose the 70's bubble letters.

No it does not. It is not in the budget and even if we had the money, Malcolm is in Hawaii.

I am sure the color scheme and hopefully the design/lettering will be changed the next time the court is repainted... however, who knows when that will be.

Good news about the standardized colors though. VERY good news.

Can anyone guesstimate how much it will cost to repaint (or even replace) the floor? It is a project WE can take on or is that too much to ask? Could we specify that?

As much as we wanted that blue ... I think getting rid of the bubble letters and Columbia blue is now a high priority, especially in light of the fact that we have an occasional telivised game from Ruston.

We understand the concept that perception is reality. Right?

This is what I have heard and is not concrete...

To totally replace the floor with a newer, higher quality floor that is soft on the joints would cost anywhere from $75,000 to $150,000

To repaint the existing floor is probably about $10,000 to $20,000

BUT, it was just repainted the summer/fall of 2001.

    This is great news.

and I think we can safely say that the ball started rolling to do this right here on BB&B. and we kept the ball rolling enough to start picking up more and more support until "they" finally listened!!!!

Sorry about that, Mrs. Dan, but some things you just don't fool with and one is Tech's REAL colors!!!!

You are absolutely right, BillPup. No matter what ANYBODY says, this official "color change" would have NEVER happened without the BB&B.

    See......they really do listen.

Ya think? I figure Dan Newman called 'em up and told them to do it.

You are right though. The move started right here on BBB, but I doubt we will ever get any credit for a positive change.

Doesn't the Athletic Dept. re-varnish the floor every year? If so, then that is an expense that should already be figured into the budget. If we were able to organize some sort of "donation" to paint the floor at the same time, it might lower the cost of the painting since the wax would already be stripped from the wood and could be reapplied after the painting took place.

Just a thought, and I know it is a bit of a long shot to get that done anyway.

    Regardless, this is good news.

I know someone who paints gym floors and I GUARANTEE you he would do it for a WHOLE LOT less than 5k. He has done several HS gyms around and they look GREAT. His son used to go to Tech. I'm not holding my breath that we could get this done even if we took up the money to pay for it. I will ask him though next time I see him (probably tomorrow night) how much he would charge to repaint the gym floor.
