The computer of my secretary (A/K/A my wife) crashed. When she tried to reboot, we got a message that sytem files have been restored and asked if we wanted to reboot, leaving us no option but to reboot. When we reboot, the same message keeps coming back up.

To give some background, last week the computer would turn to a blue screen and say "Restoring System Files" and nothing would happen. I went to a step by step boot, skipping the registration, and it worked for a few days. Yesterday, that quit working, so I got the computer to a c prompt and typed scanreg/restore. From there I picked a valid backup file, and the computer worked fine until a few minutes ago.

I'm hoping there is an easy solution, but I fear there may be a memory problem.

Does anyone literate in computers have a suggestion?

Do you have your Microsoft Windows Install disks handy?

If not, you might want to put your hands on them. It don't sound good. Sounds like some system files have been corrupted (maybe a virus).

Without being able to look at what's happening it would be hard to say. I would seriously consider taking the machine to Hi-Tech computers (if they are still in business), they could diagnose your problem much better than I or anyone else here probably could.

If I had any advise to give, it would be to find your Microsoft Install disks, take them and the machine to Hi-Tech and let them find out for sure.

I found out that Big Jim has the discs. I don't want to call him because I terminated his employment. Does this mean I have to call Big Jim?

For future reference, go and buy Norton Systemworks. It has a program called "Go Back" that will restore your computer to exactly the configuration it was at certain time points in the past. It's saved me on MANY occasions!

If you have Windows XP, doesn't that particular feature come standard? I think so, but am not sure if its exactly the same way as the Norton software.

Can't answer that. I'm running 98 (home) and 2000 (work). It isn't a feature in those that I'm aware of.

My computer was repaired today. It was, in fact, a memory problem. Once that was replaced, she booted right up. You would know Austindawg called it on the first reply. I do very much appreciate all of your ideas and suggestions.
