Ole Miss To Open 2003 Season Friday Against Louisiana Tech
First pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

    Feb. 12, 2003

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss will open its third season under head coach Mike Bianco Friday afternoon, when the Rebels host Louisiana Tech at 3 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.

Friday's game will be the first of a three-game series against the Bulldogs, and the first of a four-game home stand to open the season. Both Saturday's and Sunday's games will be at 1:30 p.m.

The Rebels return seven position starters and five pitchers that threw 40 or more innings from last year's 37-19 squad. Included among the returnees are Ole Miss' top three hitters from last season in sophomore outfielder Seth Smith, senior shortstop Chad Sterbens and senior outfielder Drew Rogers.

"We're excited to be opening the 2003 season Friday," Bianco said. "It's exciting to have such an experienced club returning from a team that won 37 games a year ago, and then to add several outstanding newcomers from a recruiting class that ranked among the top 20 in the nation. This team has been very determined during preseason workouts and they're ready to get the season started."

Smith batted .402 with four home runs and 52 runs batted in and set six Ole Miss freshman records last season. He earned SEC Freshman of the Year honors, as well as being named a first team Freshman All-America and a first team All-SEC selection.

Sterbens hit .376 with four homers and 49 RBIs and tied a school record with a 21-game hitting streak at the end of last season. He also recorded at least one hit in 29-of-30 SEC games. Rogers posted a .364 average with six home runs and 34 RBIs and is the Rebels' top returning home run hitter.

Sophomore right-hander Alan Horne, an honorable mention Freshman All-America last season, is scheduled to be the Rebels' opening day starter. Horne made 12 starts as a true freshman, going 5-2 with a 4.97 ERA, and struck out 31 in 54 1/3 innings.

Freshman right-hander Mark Holliman, from Germantown, Tenn., is scheduled to start on Saturday and senior right-hander T.J. Beam is slated to start Sunday for the Rebels. Beam, an 11th-round draft choice of the Philadelphia Phillies in last June's Major League Baseball Draft, was 2-2 with six saves and a 4.53 ERA in 24 appearances last season.

Louisiana Tech is 2-0 after opening its season with wins over Centenary, 9-7 on Feb. 5, and Mississippi Valley State, 10-1 on Feb. 7. The Bulldogs are scheduled to play at Mississippi Valley State on Thursday before traveling to Ole Miss.

The Bulldogs, 21-37 last season, are scheduled to start senior left-hander Adam Kirkendall on Friday. Kirkendall was 6-5 with a 4.70 ERA and struck out 91 in 107 1/3 innings during 18 appearances, including 17 starts, last season.

Junior right-hander Matt Varner, a junior college transfer, is slated to start Saturday and the Bulldogs have yet to announce a starter for Sunday. Varner pitched three innings of relief against Centenary, allowing four runs on six hits and struck out three in earning the win.

Junior outfielder Adam Dodson is 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs in Louisiana Tech's two games this season.

Senior first baseman Kyle Humphreys is Louisiana Tech's top returning hitter from last season, after hitting .286 with 11 home runs and 45 RBIs in 58 games. In the Bulldogs' first two games this year, he has gone 2-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI.

All three games this weekend will be carried by WTNM Supertalk Mississippi 105.5 FM. Audio of all three games can also be heard on the official Ole Miss athletic web site, www.OleMissSports.com .

Tech to Play Four Straight on the Road
    Posted Feb 12, 2003 14:00:38

ITA BENA, Miss. - Louisiana Tech takes to the road on Thursday for the first of four straight games against teams from Mississippi.

The Bulldogs (2-0) play a single game on at Mississippi Valley State on Thursday before beginning a three game weekend series at Ole Miss on Friday at 3 p.m.

On Friday, the Bulldogs will face their toughest test on the young season against the Rebels.

Ole Miss went 37-19 a year ago and was ranked in the top-25 for much of the season before a late season slide kept the Rebels out of postseason play. Friday’s game will be the season opener for the Rebels.

The Bulldogs are off to a 2-0 start under first year head coach Wade Simoneaux, who has brought an aggressive style with him from Louisiana-Lafayette where he was an assistant for seven years.

Bulldogs’ third baseman Adam Dodson is off to a great start after seeing limited playing time a year ago. The junior has two home runs in five at bats and has drove in four runs for Tech. The Bossier City native was named the Western Athletic Conference player of the week on Monday.

Adam Kirkendall and Matt Varner will start the first two games of the Ole Miss series.

Ole Miss baseball team opens 2003 season against Louisiana Tech

    John Davis

    Assistant Sports Editor
    The Oxford Eagle

Earning three wins is the ultimate goal for the Ole Miss baseball team and coach Mike Bianco this weekend when they host Louisiana Tech at Oxford-University Stadium, but earning wins isn't the only goal.

The three-game, season-opening series with the Bulldogs, which includes a 3 p.m. game Friday and 1:30 p.m. contests Saturday and Sunday, is a chance for Bianco and his coaching staff to see different lineups, pitchers and different situations that will help down the road.

"There is no doubt we want to win. But we are going to play three different lineups and play a lot of people and hopefully pitch a lot of people so we can get a little closer to finding out who the best nine are," Bianco said. "We are going to play to win and we are going to put the best guys out there, but to me the first month is finding out more about the team. We have a lot of depth and that means we get to play a lot of people and find out who is ready to get off to a good start."

Louisiana Tech has already gotten the 2003 season off to a good start. The 2-0 Bulldogs, who play at Mississippi Valley State today, have beaten the Delta Devils and Centenary already this season. That could help the Bulldogs early in the series but it's nothing the Rebels can't overcome.

"I don't think it (earlier start) is a huge thing but they have an advantage. Usually the first few innings are tough and somebody always has to break the ice. Once you can get past the first few innings, then everything is pretty even after that," Bianco said. "I expect it to be a tough weekend. Wade Simoneaux, who used to be at Louisiana-Lafayette, will have them ready to play. He's a very good coach who comes from a great program.

"Usually when you see a new coach come in they either have a great year with the influx of enthusiasm or they really struggle until they get their players in," Bianco continued. "But from everything I've heard, they look like a new club and are playing well within his system."

Simoneaux has decided on two starters for the weekend, while the third will be announced later in the series. Bulldog senior left-hander Adam Kirkendall, who struck out four batters in three innings of work against Centenary, will start Friday while junior right-hander Matt Varner (1-0, 12.00 ERA) will start on Saturday.

Top hitters for the Bulldogs include senior center fielder John Brandon, who has driven in four runs so far this season and batted .231 with four home runs and 23 RBIs last season; senior first baseman Kyle Humphreys, who had two hits against Centenary and hit .286 with 11 home runs last season; and junior outfielder Adam Dodson, who has two home runs already this year.

Ole Miss will counter with sophomore right-hander Alan Horne Friday, freshman right-hander Mark Holliman Saturday and senior right-hander T.J. Beam on Sunday. All three will have a 90-pitch limit.

Ole Miss, which finished with a .318 batting average last year, is led offensively by senior shortstop Chad Sterbens, sophomore outfielder Seth Smith and senior outfielder Drew Rogers.

REBEL NOTEBOOK: All three games can be heard locally on WTNM (105.5 FM) beginning with pregame commentary 15 minutes prior to first pitch. David Kellum, the "Voice of the Rebels," will handle the Friday and Sunday broadcasts while Richard Cross will handle Saturday's game...Coming into the weekend, Ole Miss is 23-10 all-time against Louisiana Tech. The most recent meetings came during the 2001 season in Ruston with the Rebels winning two out of three...The Rebels have won 21 straight season openers. The last loss came at the start of the 1981 season against Livingston in Oxford.

I saw your post on this thread after I started another. I thought there must be a rain delay. I hope we can get in an official game with us on top.
