So much for the committee saying that we haven't played anyone this year. We are 2-1 vs. the Sweet Sixteen. We beat New Mexico at New Mexico, beat Texas Tech on a neutral floor, and were drubbed by Tennessee.

In all likelihood, we will be 1-1 vs. Elite Eight teams. New Mexico plays Texas Tech, so that gives us 1-0. Tennessee will win unless the earth opens up and swallows that whole state, so that makes us 1-1.

I do think we should increase our schedule strength, but I am SICK of the committee manufacturing our OOC schedule into something that it is not. Pretty soon people believe what they read.

It's not the 2-3 good teams we play in OOC that hurt our schedule it is the 4-5 bottom feeders we keep playing that kill us IMO. Who did we play this year? Our lowest ranked games in OOC were terrible and you simply can't afford to play those people when you play in the same conference with several teams on the same level that you have to play twice. When you are in the SEC or Big 12 you can afford to play 4-5 bottom feeders b/c your entire conference schedule is against top 50 teams and mostly top 25 teams. That's the deal IMO.

I think it is the NATIONAL preception that we can't play with and beat UConn and Tenn, even on our home floor - for 1 or 2 of the "big games" they have all year -

Plus, when it seems like you get rolled by Tenn every year by 20+ points, even at home people tend to forget the games/wins against the other "medium" ranked teams -

Beat Tenn or UConn and the seeding will come with a 29-2 record...

Plus the "medium" ranked regional teams like Arkansas, Baylor, K-State and Miss State are not going to come to Ruston for an OOC just to take a licking when they already play in the SEC or Big XII - so 4 or 5 of those 10 OOC games are going to be questionable opponents, some as a home and home -

I don't think we have beaten UT or UCONN in at least 3-4 years have we so they may have a point.
But I don't understand why some Big 12 and SEC schools won't agree to a home and home with Tech. A loss to Tech doesn't hurt them near as much b/c they know they are going to lose 4-6 games a year due to a tough conference, but what do I know?

Losing in the first round last year doesn't help either.

The lowest RPI teams on our schedule definitely bring down our RPI. BUT, look at our RPI - we were a top 4 seed if you go by that.

The committee STATED that we are in a weak conference and need to play a tougher OOC schedule. They didn't say we needed to drop the gimmies. Of course, we could definitely replace those with better RPI teams.

I am not arguing for keeping the schedule the same. We definitely need to bring in some teams from the B12, SEC, and B10. All I am saying is that the committee and some articles are mis-representing the OOC schedule that we play.

I don't believe Tech's OOC schedule has been misrepresented. Tech was barely #16 on CollegeRPI.com's basic RPI calc (closer to being #18 than #15) with a strength of schedule barely in the Top 100 (#95). And before you blame the WAC, Tech's conference RPI was #15, but the OOC RPI was only #28.

CollegeRPI.com's discussion of adjustments to the basic RPI explains why Tech didn't get a higher seed this year.
There is an adjustment that the NCAA makes to the basic RPI. They don't say what it is (it's top secret), although it is basically a system of bonuses and penalties. Teams receive bonuses for beating teams in the top 50 of the basic RPI ("good wins") and for scheduling 50 percent of their non-conference games against opponents ranked in the top 50. Penalties are assessed for losing to non-Division I teams, losing to teams ranked 150 or below in the basic RPI ("bad losses") and for scheduling 50 percent of the non-conference schedule against teams ranked 150 or below. There is also some game location factoring in the bonuses for good wins and penalties for bad losses.

Tech's basic RPI should have been rewarded for the wins over Texas Tech, New Mexico, and Tulane. However, a penalty (probably greater than the combined bonus) should have been assessed for scheduling 50% (5 of 10) OOC games against teams ranked 150 or below. Tech only scheduled 40% (4 of 10) of its OOC games against Top 50 teams, so would not have been rewarded for that. The net RPI penalty combined with the #95 overall schedule strength prevented Tech from getting a higher seed.

Tech should always strive to get the Top 50 OOC scheduling bonus and the accompanying bonuses for wins over those teams. There is no excuse for Tech to set itself up to receive an RPI penalty as happened this year. There will usually be nine OOC games (18 WAC games plus one game for the tournament completes the allowable 28 games). Five Top 50 OOC games would guarantee a bonus and prevent any penalty.

Any comments made by the NCAA committee or media regarding this year's schedule are probably related to the RPI penalty imposed. These comments are legitimate when all of the guidelines are considered.

Our fans seem to forget that when UE$pnn plays Northeastern Conneticut State they still put 8,000+ in thier gym -

When we play our top conference foe we can barely put 3,000 -

When we play Tenn we barely put 5,000 -

People have to be willing to invest in the program - and that means SEASON TICKET PURCHASES -

But alas - Tech fans DON'T believe in that for ANY sport -

We should start marketing season tickets for next year's games now, while the great season is still fresh in our memory.

Maybe we could offer some kind of FB and BB deal? Save a little money if you buy both season tickets at the same time?

How about an all-sports ticket? Do we have anything like that? Just make somethink like the student ID, but they get a new one every year. That might save some money on the cost of printing tickets.

I'm getting all kinds of ideas for a different ticket system. Something like grocery store savings card. They have a bar code that you scan. Each person puts X amout of money in a debit account. Everytime you go to a game, it subtracts that ammount. Now you don't have to buy BB or FB or Baseball tickets. You buy an account that lets you go to all games. Tech could also do some direct marketing from this. They would know who went to what games, and could send info to them about exactly what they want. It would be expensive to set up at first, but in the long run it should be cheaper, and Flo isn't worked quite as hard.

    Now Splicer -

You are asking TECH to us modern technology -

When the attitude on campus is that a Western Union telegram is a thing of "wonder"...

An all sports pass is a great idea, especially for spring sports like baseball and softball...
