    RESTAURANT OWNER FOUND BEATEN
    posted: 04-07-2003

The owner of a popular restaurant and bar in Lincoln Parish was severely beaten over the weekend.

Law officers found Larry Rabb, owner of Rabb's Steak House, inside his truck Saturday afternoon on U.S. 167 in Union Parish.

No arrests had been made today. Grambling police said they don't have a motive yet, but Rabb's beating might be related to a robbery or an incident Friday night when he kicked several men out of his bar for fighting.

Rabb was listed in stable condition today at Willis-Knighton Medical Center in Shreveport.

Rabb's is located on an Interstate 20 service road. It is in an annexed part of Grambling on the western edge of Ruston.

***Did anyone hear anything about this? I was at Rabb's Friday night but didn't see anyone get kicked out. I hope he's okay.****

As of around 2pm Monday Larry was doing better at Willis Knighton in Shreveport. Sources say he was hit in the head with a cinder block...the early results show a brain bruise and facial bones broken, his eye was a concern but it looks like he will not lose his eyesight on the side he was hit on. Several law enforcement offices are working on this and they are closing in on who jumped him as he was walking to his truck. After he was hit it looks like he got in his truck and drove towards his home north of Ruston. Law enforcment found him in his truck on the side of Hwy 33 around 2pm Saturday past his turn to his home. He was conscious but thought he was still at Rabb's. His glasses and pepper spray were found at Rabbs on the ground by where his truck was parked. He still had his wallet and was not carrying any money outside with him when he left Rabb's.
He will be in the hospital at least this week as he is very medicated and tests are still being run. The pieces are still being put together as to what happened so I will not speculate.

Good news on Larry Rabb....the tests are coming in very much in favor of Larry....looks like the Hospital will release him early - maybe as soon as Wednesday....investigation has been turned over to D.A.'s office......seems some people who knew about this "Plan" aren't talking much.

Evidently the Lincoln Parish Sheriff's Office is not trained in certain "art forms" the way some of thier neighbors to the west are -

I've heard that with a 2 1/2 ft piece of water hose, certain law enforcement officers can get you to confess to being Sadam's sister without leaving a mark on you and all it takes is about a 30 minute "counseling" session...

Phone books work really well, too (or so I've heard). Although you better use the Shreveport or Baton Rouge Book, because I don't think you could get a guy to confess to running a redlight with the Ruston book.

Maybe they could dress the perps up as Tech fans and mascots and have RPD pepper spray them into submission.

Latest on Larry Rabb is that he is now back home in Ruston. He did not lose his eyesight and is recovering. However he is having trouble recognizing people. Probably will be awhile before he returns to work. D.A. 's office has the investigation and is making some progress.

Ruston man on the mend after April 4 beating
    Posted on April 22, 2003
GRAMBLING - The son of a Grambling restaurant owner who was beaten up early April 4 said his father's health continues to improve.

Larry Rabb, the owner of Rabb's Steak House, was attacked between 2:20 a.m. and 2:45 a.m. A Union Parish sheriff's deputy found him slumped over in his pickup truck near Lillie at 3 p.m.

"He's getting better every day," Josh Rabb, 31, said. "His physical injuries are healing. He's in Shreveport today (Monday) getting his cheekbone reconstructed."

The older Rabb left his restaurant, located on Frontage Road just across the Ruston city line, at 2:20 a.m. Between then and when the rest of employees left the restaurant at 2:45 a.m., Larry Rabb was attacked.

"The police said he got jumped in the parking lot," Josh Rabb said. "He was apparently attacked as he got into his truck."

Doctors told Josh Rabb that his father was struck on the left side of his head and face with a blunt object.

"The left side of his face was basically smashed in," Josh Rabb said. "His left cheekbone was shattered and the cartilage in his left ear was smashed."

Josh Rabb said his father also suffered a bruised brain.

"The doctor said that often, when someone is knocked out, they come to and try to do what they were doing when they got knocked out," Josh Rabb said. "Apparently, he tried to come home, except he missed the turn and went about 20 miles too far."

Josh Rabb said he is pleased with the progress made by Grambling Police Department investigators.

"They could have made an arrest that night for battery, but I think they're going after attempted murder," Josh Rabb said. "They're not wanting to get into a hurry; they don't want the person or persons responsible to get off."

Suspicion has centered on a group of individuals that Larry Rabb kicked out of his restaurant Friday evening.

"They were part of an out-of-town wedding party, so that has complicated the investigation," Josh Rabb said. "Those folks left town immediately and it's been tough to get interviews with them."

According to a dispatcher, no one from the Grambling Police Department was available because of the Easter holiday.

Josh Rabb said his dad has short-term memory problems.

"He can remember things that happened a long time ago, but can't remember things he just did," Rabb said. "But the doctor said that with a bruised brain, that's normal. It should get better."

For now, Josh Rabb said his dad is taking things slowly.

"He's come to work a couple of days," Rabb said. "He knows he supposed to get up and go to work, he just doesn't remember what he supposed to do when he gets there."

Rabb's employees say they hope he recovers soon.

"He's a role model for all the college-aged students that work here," Beth Harp, 22, said. "We go to him before we go to our parents. He helps us without being judgmental."

Carrie Cage, 23, said she doesn't understand why anyone would want to hurt Rabb.

"He's such a nice man," she said. "He was here Thursday night on stage, at his normal spot.

"It was nice to see him back up there."

Restaurant manager Sean Bowers, 27, said it's different without Rabb around.

"This place was like his second home," Bowers said. "Hopefully we'll have him back soon."

Josh Rabb said the entire community has been supportive since his father was beaten.

"People have mowed the yard, done the dishes, brought mom groceries - little things you don't think about," Rabb said. "They've been terrific."

Just a update on Larry Rabb--I visited with him Monday (yesterday) and he really looks great--lost some weight-but you could never tell he was severely beaten. He said he feels very good but his memory is still lacking....he repeats himself in conversation and you can tell he is trying to remember things as he talks...the doctors say this is normal for the beating he took and with time the memory will return. The investigation is just about complete and the lead investigator is putting the finishing touches on the files for court. I think we're very close to hearing the name or names involved. By the way Larry says thanks to everyone who has expressed their concern-he has been amazed at the outpouring of well wishes and concern.
