News Release just Posted: Kidd Dorm Demolition to Start Soon

RUSTON -- Demolition procedures for Louisiana Tech's Kidd Residence Hall will begin Monday with the placing of protective fencing around the site, followed by the disposing of remaining contents and loose materials.

Actual demolition of the building itself will come later, with the university being given 48 hours prior notice.

Jerry Drewett, Tech vice president for administrative services, said university officials have met with representatives from the Louisiana Office of Facility Planning and Control as well as H&W Demolition of Bossier City. H&W was awarded the demolition contract for $161,324.

Plans to demolish Kidd Hall began a year and a half ago, Drewett said, when it was determined that the cost to repair the structure's exterior shell exceeded the value of the building.

Initially, parking between the Early Childhood Education Center and Kidd Hall will be prohibited, Drewett said. After spring quarter classes end May 23, additional parking spaces between the center and Kidd will be blocked until the project is completed.

Duration of the demolition and site restoration has not been defined, Drewett said, but work will be completed before the beginning of fall quarter. The Kidd Hall site will become "green space" until future development plans have been finalized, he added. For the latest Louisiana Tech University News, visit www.zlatech.com

Are they going to use a wrecking ball, or implode it? Does anyone know (the article didn't say is why I ask)?

They ought to charge admission. I would have paid a weeks lunch money to see that in elementary school.

The fence is up and all the stuff that they had on the balconies is gone. It looks like it will begin soon.

I, too, would like to see this building fall. It would be awesome.

I was under the impression that it would be imploded -- seems like maybe I read something that alluded to that in the RDL a while back. Maybe not, though, I've slept since then.

Speaking of, I actually spent a few nights in that old dorm. Kinda hate to see it blown up. Ah, memories. Not a girls' RA alive that can catch me in a foot race...

Yeah, well -- they caught me! And I was helping a friend with her homework. REALLY! (I swear!)

The Tech cop escorted me out, shaking his head and apologizing: "I'm so sorry buddy. You're not the guy we were looking for." Small consolation.

Of course, my RA had heard about it in the time it took me to hike back to Neilson. He told everyone on my floor and they ragged me mercilessly for the rest of that year.

I had to go before some board and they took away my "visitation priviledges" for a month.

Ahhhhh ... Kidd. Wont miss it one bit.

Imploding a building is a VERY specialized process that requires extensive structural evaluation, blast permits ($$$), months to drill columns to attach explosives, explosion synchronization, check, double check, triple check, etc.....

Typically, building implosion is only cost feasible in space restricted areas (like major city downtown areas and the Las Vegas strip) where wrecking equipment won't fit, or in an area where a tall building has to be brought straight down (vertically). They imploded an old incinerator tower in downtown Shreveport a couple of years ago to make room for the new convention center. Again, it was a situation where they had a 300 foot tall needle-like tower that had to be brought straight down to prevent damage to adjacent properties.

Furthermore, this process was developed by one company, Controlled Demolitions Inc. out of Baltimore. As such, they have a virtual monopoly on the process. If it is done anywhere, they are the ones that do it (they did the Shreveport tower). I doubt very seriously that H & W has this capability.

Sorry to disappoint you fellas, but I would anticipate seeing the wrecking ball on this one. Now if they ever decided to take down that smokestack at the physical plant......

Man, why all this anti-Kidd rhetoric?

That's a large dorm, where are all the women gonna stay? Or, where have they been staying?

Kidd was not part of my regular haunts while I was at Tech. I dated only one girl who stayed there and that ended one night in the lobby of Kidd when, after only 2 dates, she was looking for some kind of commitment! I told her sure, I am committed to dating you when I can't find anyone else. That didn't go over too well....

Well, I drove by Kidd dorm last night and they have a huge crane with a wrecking ball attached to it sitting right next to it. Looks like no imploding...but, it'll still be something neat to watch.

After this got around campus you were really lucky to find a wife. She must be extremely tolerant!

I assume you learned a lot from that mistake.

What year was Kidd constructed? I don't remember it from the 60s.

If that building survived 40 years or less, the story should be about the arrest and imprisonment of the contractor! I hope they build for the long term when they replace it!

I believe Kidd opened in the Fall of 1966. If I'm not mistaken, it is the newest of the girl's dorms. I lived there 2 years, had a great time, and hate to see it go.
