The NCAA has added a new provision that will require that Division I-A conferences have eight full-time members that satify all Division I-A requirements. But that new provision does not go into effect until August 1, 2005. Thus the Big East is not forced to have eight football schools for the 2004 season.
If that bylaw was in effect now, the Sun Belt would not be a Division I-A conference. The Sun Belt currently only has five I-A football schools (New Mexico State, North Texas, Arkansas State, ULL, and Middle Tennessee State) that compete in the required six men's and eight women's conference sports needed to count as a full-time Division I-A member. To count as one of the eight full-time members, schools will be required to compete in the Division I-A conference in football, men's basketball, women's basketball, and two other women's team sports under the new provisions.
Keeping Temple would not help the Big East meet the new requirement unless it joined for all sports.
