'Very high probability' Mountain West will expand
FORT WORTH – Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson said Tuesday he thinks there's a "very high probability" that the league will expand, which could open the door for TCU to join.
Although he wouldn't comment about TCU specifically when asked about candidates for expansion, Thompson alluded to discussions with the Horned Frogs as "an open secret." Thompson said the Mountain West has not issued invitations to any school. The News reported last week that TCU is weighing an expected invitation to the Mountain West.
TCU athletic director Eric Hyman said Monday conference issues are on the back burner because the football team is 9-0 and chasing a BCS berth. Thompson said his league could decide within six weeks whether to expand.
"Again, it's not 100 percent decided that we will have more than eight members, but I think everyone has looked at all the material we've been sending to them and is on the same page," said Thompson, referring to the league's presidents. "There are a lot of compelling reasons it makes sense at this time to look at additional members."
