Thread: Memphis/UNT Bowl Game

To begin with, honestly why would CUSA even be considering a team like UNT. Memphis, a break out team this year who has performed moderately on offense, has literally reaked havoc on this UNT defense that is supposedly a good unit. This wimprine guy is picking these guys apart, at one point he was 10-11 for 208 yards or something to that tune. This dominance has been without Memphis' leading rusher, Williams who has almost 1500 yards for the year. The second stringer is also out, which defaults I think a freshman as the starter. The UNT offense is ineffective at best and only sport Patrick Cobbs, an explosive running back lost in the mediocrity of the SBC. I was over hearing earlier in the game, he has run for the most yards per game and yet he was not nominated for the walker award for the best rb in the nation. The only logic that the CUSA could make of adding a team like UNT is the geographic rivalry with RICE, SMU, and TULSA. All these teams would be within a 4 hr drive or so and would give SMU a cross town rival to play against. But all in all, the UNT deserves to stay in the SBC and that we honestly would be a much better fit in the CUSA. Just my .02 cents worth. -Kyle

I don't think SMU will every be in a conference with UNT if they get their way. It would be a disgrace to them.

Do believe competitive history and potential will play in Tech's favor against the likes of UNT. Their biggest win in program history remains the victory over Tennessee in '74. They've done little else.

For all the problems, Tech enjoys the reputation of being a competitive program historically. Even this season with the victory over Michigan State, we've repeatedly proven that we can take out a BCS program. That enhances a conference reputation, which leads to better bowls, bowl payouts, and improved recruiting for all in the conference.

UNT could play Alabama for the next 50 years running--and it would take them every last one of those seasons to match the number of victories Tech posted against the Tide in '97 and '99

The Sun Belt Emperor has no clothes.

Get real guys, at least UNT hung around and didn't get rocked 49-14! How dare any of you criticize UNT, or any other WINNING team, after that crap Tech put on the field this year, and last year, and in 2000.

Sheeeet! Memphis and UNT both would club Rice quite easily, and especially not surrender a gazillion yards rushing either.

There are 56 teams bowling, and we ain't one of them thanks to that ass Bicknell. So, please, do not criticize teams that managed to win, or at least, not suck.

Agreed! We sure as hell shouldn't be criticizing anyone else. When you lose by 30 to Tulsa and by 35 to Rice at home and give up 672 yards rushing, you're pretty much at the bottom of the barrel.

Absolutely. UNT has done everything it's supposed to do - win your conference and go to a bowl game.

Besides, they may be our WAC teammate in '05.

I dare. They won a conference Tech would easily have won this year in spite of Bicknell.

I dare because they have done JACK outside of their conference. They haven't gotten a thing done against BCS competition with the exception of Arizona--and they only were able to do that because of Mackovic's total inability to manage a football team.

They went to a bowl. Big deal. It is the only bowl they could ever get into.

You mean like losing to SFA and giving Middle Tennessee their first-ever D-1A win?

Sorry to remind you of those ignominious moments in Tech football history, however, if Tech had just won its 3rd straight WAC championship, we'd be hearing from those sorry-excuses-for-human-excrement lsuseless fans, saying how we haven't done anything.

You know...the BCS race was so close that if Bicknell could have just screwed up one more game than he did...not pulling it out against UTEP, handing SMU its first win, or not upsetting Michigan State, LSU's BCS Strength of Schedule would have dropped 0.0055 overall, dropping them from the 29th toughest schedule to the 35th toughest schedule...Making the final BCS standings look like this...

Don't fault him too much - he tried like hell to give the game to UTEP...

Too bad for USC that Ryan Moats had a good game...

And they would be wrong. We could just point them in the direction of Spartan Stadium and Bryant-Denny and say "That is what we've done before."

Now compare that to UNT. Again, what have they accomplished outside of the Sun Belt? Have they beaten anyone like a Michigan State or an Alabama? Have they ever played with the type of competitive spirit that earned a standing ovation from fans of a Top 5 team? How many BCS heads do they have on their trophy wall?

Like it or not, the fact is that that bunch is making a serious attempt to tear Tech down. Regardless of who is in charge or his performance, we need to fight fire with fire and take an honest look at what UNT has actually done outside of their conference--and then make our case where and when it needs to be made.

They have done jack outside of their conference? Kind of like us when we won the WAC. And if you are speaking historically, I don't think we have ever beat UNT on the field. But I think we are missing the point here. CUSA obviously is not looking at "football teams" as the sole deciding factor for admission. If that were true, why would they take Rice/SMU/TU?? I think UNT is a major threat to us. They would be much less of a project for USA than La Tech. They have a metropolitan area to draw from and they have a "plan." Don't knock a school that is at least taking steps to try to move up while we sit and watch the UCFs and Boise Sts pass us by.

UTEP will bring the SUN BOWL to the table and get the bid to Conference USA! The only hope Tech has is if the Sun Bowl does not agree to give the conference the bowl tie in.

We use to beat North Texas State when we played them prior to joining D1-A.

Not much of a chance that C-USA will "bite" on this.

C-USA has 5 bowl games, so they are not desperate for another.

Plus, they would have to think long and hard before picking up a team that far west.
