News Release just Posted: Techsters Endure Tough Road to Penn State
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - As if playing the No. 6 ranked team in the country on its home court wasn't enough of a challenge for Louisiana Tech, head coach Kurt Budke's squad must now overcome a Trains, Planes and Automobiles-like trip to State College, Pa., Friday.
The 12th-ranked Lady Techsters left Ruston at 9:30 a.m. Friday and what was suppose to be a six-hour trip up north turned into a nightmarish 18-hour venture that put Tech at its hotel at 4:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
"People need to know what these kids have gone through the last 24 hours," Budke said. "We are asking a lot of them to rebound quickly enough to be ready physically as well as mentally for the game. Luckily, they are 18-, 19- and 20-year-olds who do recover more quickly than us older folks."
After busing to Shreveport and catching a 12:10 p.m. flight to Cincinnati, everything seemed to be copesthetic for Budke and Co; however, due to wintry weather conditions in the Ohio area, the Lady Techsters landed 15 minutes late to find their connecting flight to State College had been cancelled.
With the only other flight to State College already booked full, Tech was forced to catch a 7 p.m. connection to Baltimore, a flight that didn't actually leave until 9 p.m. Upon arriving in the Baltimore area and finding that their luggage had not been sent with them, the Lady Techster travel party then boarded a bus for the four-hour trek to State College, arriving at the hotel at 4:30 a.m.
"It was simply a modern-day version of Trains, Plane and Automobiles," said Budke, referring to the 1980s comedy starring John Candy and Steve Martin. "It was a day full of Murphy's Law; if it could go wrong, it did go wrong. However, we told the players that they have the Christmas holidays to recover. They simply have to gut it out for the next 24 hours."
