"The case shocked many Canadians who harboured illusions that 12- and 13-year-old girls' sexuality was limited to fixating on the gyrations of the latest pop idol."

" An army of mini-me celebrities gaze out from the covers of publications such as Teen People, Teen Vogue, Cosmo Girl and Elle Girl, plugging junior-branded merchandise, movies and TV shows."

"Products that used to be designated adults-only are now being peddled to kids, with not-so-subtle sexual connotations: tween-targeted cosmetics, courtesy of mini-branding giants the Olsen twins; paraphernalia with "Porn Star" and Playboy-bunny logos, sold in the juniors section at department stores; and even kid-branded lingerie. American retailer Abercrombie & Fitch introduced thong underwear to its Abercrombie Kids line last year, featuring phrases such as "Kiss Me," "Wink Wink" and "Eye Candy."

Studies have proven that girls who grow up watching MTV and the like will begin breast development and periods sooner in life than those who are not exposed to sexually oriented media products. The article does a good job of explaining why young girls don't mind sexual encounters.

My 11 year old daughter was invited to a birthday party for a girl in her class last month. The party was a pizza party and a movie. The movie this girls mom chose was "Chasing Liberty" ( I think that is the correct name). I looked the movie up on a review site and the whole plot is about a girl whose goal is to get drunk and loose her virginity. Not my Idea of 11 year old entertainment. But My daughter was the only one who didn't get to see the movie. I was stunned that other parents didn't mind their children being exposed to that type of influence. Call me old and over-protective.

    Good for you, bref!!!

Nowhere in that article are parents mentioned as responsible parties. It talks about the media and movies and culture and society and Clinton and MTV and blahblahblah.

Parents are only described as "overworked" or "not home".

The problem is not the media. The problem is not "kids these days."

    WHERE ARE THE PARENTS?

Sooner, you avatar is still funny to those who know that you are mocking, not embracing, the trashy-sex culture.

You are right champ. If parents would do their JOB and not try to be their kid's "best friend", we'd have much less of a "trashy-sex" culture these days. What many parents don't realize that it is their God given DUTY to rear their children. You can't just pass discipline off to the schools or anyone else and hope the child turns out allright. As we all can see, That doesn't work.

Wait a minute.....did I just say " You are right champ"?

Well, I must admit it is a tiny bit titillating.

All kidding aside, I agree with you Champ. We, as parents, should not be allowing our children, especially 11-15 to be going to parties where other children can go in and out of rooms where orgies are taking place. We also should not be allowing them to watch trash like Ms. Jackson. I am proud to say my children were hurded out of the room before the halftime show started because I knew she and her cohorts were performing. I didn't need to know in advance that her store bought goods were going to be put on display.

My daughter is a sinner just as I am. Later in life, she may choose to participate in putting her mouth in filthy places, but I can say with nearly perfect certainty it hasn't happened yet, or some young man would be a eunuch. Believe me, I know where she is within a few feet at any given time.

A mom at my work has a 17 year old boy in 12th grade. For Christmas she got him one of them cellphones that takes pictures.

When he's out, she calls and asks where he is, and who is there. Then she gets him to send a picture of his surroundings.

If he says he's at Waffle House, she makes him send a picture of the waitress or a bowl of grits. If he says he's with Bobby and Sue, he needs to be able to produce a picture of them scratching their heads. The picture request is subtly different each time, so he cant take pictures in advance and save them for later.

Of course, the kid acts annoyed everytime ... BUT he can stay out all night, as long as he can send instantaneous photographic evidence that he's safe and out of trouble. Kind of a nifty system I think.

Hmmmm....speaking as a non parental type as yet, that sounds like a nifty idea, Champ967. Very creative! But, when I think of my two nieces I'd rather Cal&Ken and spouse employ Soonerdawg's method ....knowing where they are at all times and perhaps that euneuch thing, too ....at least until they're 29 or so!

You make a joke, but as a parent, I really do fight that feeling. However, I also have the theory that we are allowing our children to mature too quickly in the area of sex, but not quickly enough in preparation for marriage. I sometimes wonder if God did not intend for our children to be ready for marriage at around 16, but we have artifically retarded their emotional and intellectual maturity that readies them for the real world. Thus, God gave them bodies and desires for sex at 15, but we're saying, wait until 29 when you have your brain back to get married an act on this wonderful gift.

Don't anyone tell my daughter about this theory please.

You gotta be careful about all that - and what you tell your daughter...she might hold it over your head later. My dad used to tell me I couldn't double date until I was 35, and then only with he and my mother. Don't think for a minute that I haven't reminded himOf course they got married after my mom's freshman year at Tech....after my grandparents had rejected their initial request for them to marry before her senior year of high school and for her to transfer to/ graduate from Ruston High while Daddy was in school at Tech. They'll celebrate 42 years of marriage this year even starting at their tender ages.

Actually I think the most conservative of conservatives - those families that practice traditional courtship - almost all marry very young as soon as the guy is ready to support a family at a level where the bride's dad approves. I've known many brides that were 18 and 19 - and grooms the same age or only slightly older. And, they almost all have kids instantly too...very different from the cultural norms today. I expect that goes along with some of your theory. And, I've actually been surprised that they don't promote long courtships because they don't want them to be tempted to sin....again..fits with your theory.

Which daughter? I think you have more to worry about with one wanting an early marraige than the other.

That was a scary article. I think my little girls will stay with me all the time. It is so hard for me to understand the attitude these girls have. What does that say for the peer pressure our kids will grow up with. We thought it was hard on us growing up, but we had nothing compared to this. I didn't even know what that was in Jr. High.
