SMU president Gerald Turner said, " We want a tight division." "It's no secret we are interested in Louisiana Tech. Any schools from east of Dallas would be considered." Members of Conference USA will tentatively meet in April to discuss adding another school for 2005.

Saw the same in the Dallas Morning News. Good little article! HUMMM>> I don't think UNT is east of Dallas. At least not the last time I looked.

Louisiana Tech has ally for C-USA bid

FRESNO, Calif. – SMU president Gerald Turner said the incoming members of Conference USA will tentatively meet in April to discuss adding another school for 2005. Conference USA needed to add another school when TCU decided to leave for the Mountain West. Several schools have sent proposals to C-USA officials hoping to be included.

"We want a tight division," Turner said. "It's no secret we are interested in Louisiana Tech. Any schools from east of Dallas would be considered."

I just don't see UNT getting a bid over La Tech.

    First -

I'm glad to see someone FINALLY had the nads to "speak up" for us in public - now if only Tulsa, Rice, Houston and Tulane would follow suit...

    Second -

Does this stance REALLY mean that UNT was judged more favorably by the CUSA consultant than us and this was a prelimianry "shot-across-the-bow" fired by SMU to re-emphasize that they don't want North Texas in the same conference as them and they will pull out all stops to make sure it doesn't happen...

    Just something to think about...

Remember SMU can't block this by themselves and they are going to need some help and this might be the first step in "swaying" the others...

Whatever the reason - THANK YOU SMU....

From what I have learned recently, CUSA is down to three realistic options.
    1. Take Toledo, Miami, Bowling Green because they are claiming its an all or nothing deal for them. Therefore those three are out.
    2. Take UNT.
    3. Do not expand.

Louisiana Tech is rated at the bottom of the 7 potential candidates and the top two candidates (UTEP and Temple) are indicating that they aren't interested.

Temple is going to sign a football only deal with the MAC shortly.

Unless one of the MAC schools breaks ranks UNT will be in CUSA IF they vote to expand

    Rooster -

I think we have seen the "first" of the politicking with this brief snatch of news...

I expect alot more of this in the next few weeks -

This is also where the WAC gamble pays off - it seems our association with SMU the past 3 years isn't as bad as they first though it would be, now does our association with Tulsa and Rice carry the same weight PUBLICALLY...

The Texas private school politics may save Tech.

As best you can tell, who is actively opposing Tech right now?

    Hopefully so -

But usually the only thing politics gets you is broken promises, disapointment and a lighter wallet...

I would love to know if Miami of Ohio and Toledo would actually turn bids down if given to the two of them.

If I were a sunbelt fan, I would be concerned about
    UNT to CUSA
    MTSU to MAC
    Cajuns to WAC

    or UNT to the WAC......

The Sun Belt folks are having a hard time with this. They hate to see Tech get in CUSA, however if Tech doesn't get in, the WAC will take some Sun Belt schools for our company in the East.
