    Tennis Techsters Snap Losing Streak
    Updated Mar 12, 2004 15:20:42

RUSTON — The losing streak is over for the Tennis Techsters.

Friday's 5-4 home victory over Lamar snapped a six-game losing skid and upped the Techsters record to 2-7 on the year. Tech's only other win was a 6-1 decision over Grambling State on Jan. 23.

Staring at a 4-2 deficit and needing to take the final three matches to claim victory, the Techsters rallied to beat the Lady ???, who fell to 3-5 on the season.

Junior Saharai Uriarte, playing No. 2 for the Techsters, picked up Tech's third win of the day, rallying after dropping the first set to win the final two (2-6, 6-1, 6-1) against Nicole Weber.

The junior from Guadalajara, Mexico, improved to 5-4 on the season in singles, making her the only Techster to claim a record over .500 on the year.

Freshman Monica Kelly evened the match at four apiece with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Hayley Bakker. Kelly evened her match record at 4-4 on the year, and she picked up her first win of the season from the No. 3 position.

Andrea Moncada closed out the win with an easy 6-0, 6-1 win over Beatrice De Regil at the No. 6 position. The win was Moncada's first of the year.

Earlier in the day, Elena Korbout kept junior Holly Ready winless for the season playing out of the No. 1 spot with a 6-3, 6-2 win. In No. 4 play, Andrea Martinez defeated sophomore Avril Martinez (6-2, 6-0), and junior Anabella Duque picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory from the No. 5 spot over Kendall Gibbs.

In doubles action, Lamar took two out of three matches. Lamar's combo of Andrea Martinez and Bakker defeated Tech's combo of Avril Martinez and Uriarte, 8-4, at the No. 2 doubles' spot.

De Regil and Weber defeated Tech's No. 3 doubles' team, Duque and Katie Westbrook (8-5), but the Techsters' No. 1 combo of Ready and Kelly won 8-6 over Korbout and Gibbs.

The Tennis Techsters return to action March 27 with a 2 p.m. home contest against Centenary.
