Thread: WAC schools dropping like flies!

    I found this on ESPN.com:

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- San Jose State's Academic Senate has voted to limit funding for sports teams and has recommended the school withdraw from Division I-A and the Western Athletic Conference.

The 21-11 vote, conducted by secret ballot Monday, was intended to send a message to the university's soon-to-be-named president that academics should come ahead of football in tight budget times.

The Academic Senate -- a group of faculty, students, staff and administrators that advises the president -- proposed that savings from athletics funding be transferred to academic programs

"We're not opposed to football per se, but Division I-A has costs we can't afford," said James Brent, the political science professor who pushed for withdrawal.

The senate vote is only symbolic -- presidents have ignored faculty recommendations on athletic funding in the past.

But Brent said he hopes the vote will "counter what the president will hear from a group of very loud boosters who don't have the best interests of the university as a whole at heart."

The Academic Senate also voted to have the entire faculty vote on the question of withdrawal from Division I-A and the WAC in a referendum.

Monday's vote is the first formal faculty recommendation to emerge from a year-long debate over athletics funding. It comes as the university's budget tightens and the football program struggles to fill seats and win games.

The two finalists for the university president's job last week warned against taking hasty action over athletics funding and pointed out the benefits of intercollegiate athletics.

Every university has its share of resident "tree hugger" liberal types. They typically infest the Academic Senate's at most schools and are known to be antagonistic toward athletics. I suspect this is a power play on their part while there is a void in the president's office.

Faculty (or Academic) Senates are routinely ignored by university administrations unless they support the administration's agenda.

Most tree-huggers are people who like to hunt squirrels. They come in all political, religious and academic/athletic types. They appreciate the value of trees. Tree-hugging isn't a sin. All our closest ancestors lived in trees before they moved out on the plains, according to some scientists.

Man, you are one wired-up dude! You come up with some of the damnest pronouncements. The next thing we know you will be telling us that Timothy Leary was last seen driving Elvis to Wendy's!

I'm wondering what connection there is between a person's environmental views, academic credentials, and interest in sports? Is that something Foxnews told you?

I for one support strong environmental regulation, am pursuing a masters degree, and LOVE college football. Do I need to abandon my graduate studies, TX, so I wont lose interest in Tech athletics? Or will I just start madly humping trees and flower pots?

When I was at NC State the senate acted several times.

The NC State recommended that the ACC should not expand and focus on student (the travel was just too much). They were always at it with the president.

Make no mistake, I'd love for us to be in Conference USA. Perhaps a few games played at East Carolina will show us how to improve our attendance or facilities. Matchups against Marshall and Tulane along with Southern Miss would be fantastic. With all that being said, If I were a conference usa school I would not choose Tech either quite honestly. Nearly all of the Conf USA schools have nice football stadiums to play compared to Tech's Joe Aillet. No jumbtron. I have seen Texas High Schools with better stadiums. The baseball parking lot looks like one for a circle k. Of course the TAC is nice, but even it could use some touchups.....new floor, scoreboard etc.

UTEP is the leading candidate and they WILL be the choice. Lying to myself will not change that and perhaps you others should realize that. Yes OUR program here at Tech is better than UTEP from Top to Bottom but if Conf USA cared about that , we would have been selected with or before SMU, Rice, and Tulsa. The clear care is about market and the POTENTIAL to gain a meaningful piece of those markets.

Tech does not offer that option with Ruston having a population of 20000 and that's when school is in! Shreveport and Monroe doesn't give a rat's ass about TECH and that really really hurts. However, that's Tech's fault and no one else's.
