Boise won football and ended up 7th, Nevada won Men's b-ball and ended up 6th. I doubt they would be willing to trade situations with SMU, Rice, or Tulsa. This doesn't change the fact that we have a lot of improving to do.

It still cracks me up that some of these MTSU people talk crap when they couldn't even beat ULL last season. Talk about delusions of grandeur.

The WAC commissioners cup --just like any conference "all sports" award-- is a joke. Any process that rewards as many points for golf, bowling, soccer, swimming or volleyball as it does for football, basketball and baseball is a flawed process.

Ask yourself this question: Would you trade ONE (1) single WAC football championship for FIVE (5) all sports awards? I wouldn't. NO WAY! So, there's your answer as to how important the WAC commissioners award is.

The sad thing is that if you just take football, basketball and baseball we would still still be at the bottom.

Boise State and Tulsa with Baseball would probably beat us.

It's almost impossible to get a reasonable view of WAC schools in an all-sports competition since all 10 WAC members only compete in 7 of the 18 WAC sports—football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, women’s cross country, women’s volleyball, and women’s tennis. But Tech is dead last when you look at points earned just from those seven sports.

There is plenty of room for improvement in every sport other than women's basketball (1st place) and women's indoor and outdoor track & field (both 2nd place finishes).

Actually, we won a single WAC football championship; and, in retrospect, I can't really see that it did diddly-squat for us ??

On the other hand, check out this list.

    2003-04 Standings
    1. Rice, 100.5

    2. SMU, 83.0
    3. Tulsa, 80.5
    4. Fresno State, 77.0
    5. UTEP, 76.5
    6. Nevada, 76.0
    7. Boise State, 73.5
    8. Hawai‘i, 60.0
    9. Louisiana Tech, 53.5
    10. San Jose State, 42.5

Notice that 4 of the top 5 schools (FresnoState out because of geography, o.c.) above were the ones chosen by C-USA for expansion.

    Coincidence ?

The simple truth is that the WAC screwed up big time in dealing with the Belt schools.

If they had wanted to they could have had a 14 team WAC where most of the revenue went to the schools generating the money.

They had a shot at a 12 team WAC with UNT, ASU, ULL, and MTSU though that would have been a harder sell to the Belt schools.

Instead what they offered was a 9 team WAC and felt confident that if UNT thought about saying no that a call to Lafayette would make UNT worry enough to leap and if not then they would take ULL.

That failed so they pitched UNT and ULL to be 10 team WAC. They believed that both would come. When that failed they thought a call to Jonesboro or Murfreesboro would shake someone loose. They pitched to ASU (and from what I hear MTSU as well) thinking that ULL or UNT would blink out of fear that ASU and apparently MTSU would jump.

In the end all four held firm. As far as I'm concerned the MVP's of the Sun Belt are:
Sidney McPhee of MTSU because of his role on the NCAA Board of Directors he was able to get valuable information about future NCAA developments that help reassure everyone of the Belt's future.
Les Wyatt of Arkansas State for being a strong mediator who brought in his own experiences heading a program located in a western league.
Ray Authement of Louisiana Lafayette his familiarity with UL System financial documents were valuable in exposing some overly optimistic descriptions of the revenues and costs of WAC membership along with his own stories of ULL's experiences in the Big West.
Norval Pohl of UNT for investigating the WAC's claims and for his trust in his fellow Sun Belt presidents.

In fact all four should be comended for developing good relationships with their peers that led them to believe that they could in fact trust what the others were telling them about their intentions. Presidents not interested in athletics would likely not have gotten to know each other well enough to have that trust.
