    UTEP & Special Teams

UTEP ran a clinic Saturday on what good kickers and special teams can do in managing field position, etc. They tackle well & they don't run backwards on punt returns or bobble a lot of catches. That punter was something special and kicker could put them up high quickly and deep.

I don't mean anything bad about young man trying to be a punter, but we definitely need to find a real punter in our recruiting this year.

I thought Palmer's little brother is a future NFL QB as well! Also, never seen so many tall receivers (6-2 to 6-4). They don't drop as many passes as we do.

Critical penalties in first half wiping out gains or putting us in long yardage situations too often, great special teams with kicking game by UTEP, dropped balls, Jerron Wishon (sp?) best cover guy not suited up, #25 letting up on coverage to allow deep pass, Moats not even 80% second half, and lack of numerous holding calls on UTEP in second half are what got us beat. Yet we still managed to be in game into middle of 4th quarter.

They were saying during the game that the UTEP punter was #10 in the nation in punting. Although by the stats, Butler outpunted him yesterday. Of course the only stat that means anything is 44-27.

Just looking at the punt averages is totally misleading.

Butler may have won the total punt yardage battle by 2 yards in the 8 punts by both teams. But Tech lost the net punting battle with UTEP punt returns gaining 67 more yards than Tech including setting up the TD that effectively put the game away. That's over 8 yards net average per punt (almost a first down) that Tech lost on every exchange of punts.

For the season Tech is punting for a 39.8 average compared to opponents' 38.8, but Tech's net average is 31.7 to 37.4 for the opponents. Hard to maintain field position losing almost six yards each punt exchange.

Net punting is a team statistic so don't slam the punter. He has made 2 touchdown saving tackles because the other 10 couldn't make it. Considering the schedule, he has outpunted our opponents carrying almost a 40 yard average is a great accomplishment. Other than rushing(Moats) what other stat leads the opponents. Butler is also #4 in the WAC.

Our last punter didn't do that well in 2 of his 4 years and yet he had a great career at tech, and the miners # 10 man
only got to that level in his soph year.

I think Matt will have a great career as a punter at Tech and he hasn't been helped in net b/c of like 3-4 punt returns for a TD this year.HE has boomed some and shown his potential this guy is a true freshman. Punting is way down on the list of worries as far as I am concerned.

The backup punter seems to have a good leg from what I have seen. Why haven't they used him?

Because Matt is clearly the best punter. This kid has a great future ... and he's averaging 40 yards a punt right now as it is.

Don't let that net punting crap fool you. Their long punt return should NEVER have happened. That was a GREAT punt by Butler ... except Farrow AND Wilson both missed tackles. Inexcusable ... and the blame does not reside on Butler.

I want to see Matt get more consistent, we all do. Upton was inconsistent for 4 years, but if you look back at Upton's freshman year, Butler has had a much better first year.

I believe there is a crucial stat that is missing from the punting discussion. Hang Time!! Butler's punts are relatively low giving our coverage guys too little time to get down field. I don't believe his distance is the problem. On the other hand, it seems like Brazil is having to wait forever to get the punt which means he always has somebody right on him by the time he catches the ball. I've been to all the home games and watched all the others on tv. The other teams' punters boom the ball very high, and ours travels at a lower trajectory.

This is not to excuse missed tackles, but I'm sure it adds some reasoning as to why our field position differential is not good after punts.

That was not true on one of the punts last Saturday. Remember, that's when our cover guy ran into the punt returner at least a full second before the ball got there.

    Re: UTEP & Special Teams

We had to many mistakes on special teams and way to many penalities. I think we had 6 straight offensive plays with a flag on us.

That is a sign of a team that is not ready to play. That is what happens when you don't work on Monday-Friday. That is what happens when you have a poor coach vs a good coach. This is the same reason we have lost to Rice, Hawaii and Boise the last few years. We just have been out-coached during the week.
