    CUSA attendance numbers

Got these YTD CUSA attendance numbers off the CUSAabbs board.

WARNING: What you are about to read may be an illusion (or strictly bullshit!). Be careful not to puke on your shoes.

    NCAA Average Attendance Report 10/24/04

    57 - *UTEP - Avg: 39664 - 4 games
    65 - Memphis - Avg: 35442 - 3 games
    68 - ECU - Avg: 32352 - 3 games
    75 - USM - Avg: 30524 - 2 games
    79 - Marshall - Avg: 28913 - 3 games
    80 - Houston - Avg: 27693 - 2 games
    83 - UAB - Avg: 26857 - 3 games
    85 - Tulane - Avg: 24322 - 3 games
    90 - UCF - Avg: 22393 - 3 games
    93 - *SMU - Avg: 21882 - 3 games
    95 - *Tulsa - Avg: 20818 - 3 games
    103 - *Rice - Avg: 17401 - 3 games

    *Currently in WAC.

Yes, that's the same SMU team that packed in a whopping 10K (at most) for the game against Louisiana Tech 2 weeks ago (a game that I attended). And 4K of that 10K were Louisiana Tech fans.

Also, does ANYBODY really believe that the U of Houston is averaging over 27K at home? Not in their wildest dreams.

Of course, it's only a 2-game average for Houston, so the Cougars must have hosted UT in one of them. How about Tulane's 24K? Do you believe that? Nope. Tulsa? Not likely.

What we have here folks, is an integrity problem with the numbers. Many of our BB&B posters like to "dog" the LA Tech administrators about whether they should be reporting 19K instead of 21K, or some such nonsense. It seems that we're always arguing about whether or not Tech is "fudging" the attendance numbers.

But after looking at this list, one thing is certain, if Louisiana Tech is "fudging" its' attendance numbers, most of the above CUSA teams are just BLATANTLY lying about theirs. I HIGHLY suspect that most of the other CUSA numbers (Marshall, ECU, UCF, etc...) are bogus too.

Great post! Save it and repost everytime some bozo posts the inevitable claim of Tech fabricating its attendance numbers.

UH played Army and Miami at home, and they play Tulane this weekend. They sold game packs to the Army game (4 tickets for $20), and they had 35,000 at the Miami game...a good contingent from Miami plus all the Hurricanes that live within 3 hours of Houston.
I'm an asshole! What's your excuse?

CARTEK, with all due respect, a few weeks ago I read on some of the fan boards that the REPORTED Miami-Houston game attendance was a total fabrication.

According to most of the posters who attended and subsequently commented on the Miami-Houston attendance, the REAL attendance was far less than the 35K the Cougars reported. But in any case, it wasn't as good as the 43K we drew for the LA Tech-Miami game last year in Shreveport, for a Thursday night game that was also broadcast on national TV.

You stepped in it HD when you mentioned the 43K fabricated number for the 2003 Tech-Miami game. That crowd was inflated 10-15% from the actual 37K-39K.

And I saw parts of the Miami-Houston game on TV, and the wide shots of Reliant Stadium showed a crowd that looked to be somewhere around the 30K range, also a 10-15% inflation over the reported figure.

Don't chastise other schools for something that past and current Tech administrations have historically done at least as badly if not worse. 10-20% attendance inflations have been common practice at Tech prior to this year. Thankfully this year attendance inflation for Tech home games has been greatly reduced to the point of being almost negligible.

    DFM,

Where is your shot of the TECH-Miami crowd?

And for reference before the pictures are brought out, the 50,015 capacity of Independence Stadium is distributed roughly 19K west side, 2K north end zone, 19-21K east side, and 8-10K in the new south end zone. Impossible to have had 43K even if every west and east side seat was occupied (and they weren't) without at least 3K total in the end zones.

    Re: CUSA attendance numbers

Toolame had about 4,000 for their HC game vs. UAB, and that included the 700 UAB fans there.

During the COX broadcast, they kept showing the same 50-60 Toolame fans in a tight shot everytime the Weenies scored, which was a lot in their 59-55 win.

We have attendance problems, no question, and it'll get worse when Tulsa comes to S'port. But, it's tiring to read posts from the morons in CUSA condeming our attendance. We did have 18,000 for HC, not 4,000.

Um.....this kinda went over your head RC. The whole point of my argument was that Lousiaina Tech isn't the ony school exxagerating home attendance figures. And in fact, Tech seems to be "less guilty" of it than most schools.

Good post HD thanks for posting those. No doubt they are exaggerating also after looking at that.

I am one of the ones who doesn't agree with, and will sometimes say it, exaggerating our attendance b/c I think our attitude is IF we told people how many were really here we might have to do something.

I would agree with that statement...this year. But Tech was one of the worst offenders in past years making the Miami game about the worst possible example to quote.

Oh sure.....nobody but Tech EVER exxagerated attendance in the past. :rolleyes4 (You REALLY should get out more often!)

Tonight I was surfing TV channels and I stopped for a few minutes to watch the ULM-UNT game from Denton. I saw no more than a few "family and friends" attending the ULM-UNT game. There's NO WAY more than 5,000 fans were in attendance. But I GUARANTEE you, the box score tomorrow will give a figure much higher, probably about 15K.

10,893 in the box score this morning. Still way too high from what I saw on TV.
