Was Bates eligible for the 2024 MLB draft? I expected to see him get drafted based on all the college honors he received. Can someone make it make sense to me?

Bates is one of my all time favorite Tech players. MLB is not looking for great hitters who don’t have a natural position. I believe he could be a set up guy and also think he can hit better than many who were drafted based on the eye test. Hope he gets an FA deal.

Very few seniors or 5/6 yr players get drafted - teams can sign them to FA contracts at a much lower value

If players come back for their last year, they lose what little leverage they have

I like Bates, he was fun to watch, but I am not surprised at all that the MLB has shown no interest. His stuff was (is) not very good, not major league quality for sure, so what does he offer as an everyday player to the majors? Not much. Maybe he’ll hook on with some team and he will improve enough in the minors to eventually get a shot at the bigs. If I were him I wouldn’t count on it, find a career and get on with his life.
