Just doing some browsing today and found these two stats which stood out to me.
In the WAC
Tech is 3rd in total offense and almost 400 yds/game.......but
Tech is 9th is scoring offense(only SMU is lower) at 26 pts/game
Thats a pretty big discrepency.
Well, actually it's not too surprizing.
If you look back at all the times we flubbed in the red zone due to stupid play calling, butter fingers, or stupid penalties, you can see that we've been pretty good at moving the ball down the field but less than strllar at collecting the points that the movement should have earned.
It's called "lack of killer instinct". Our guys just don't have it this year.
Did you guys notice that Louisiana Tech didn't have a "big play" in the entire Hawaii game? Oh sure, we moved the ball up and down the field all night. And Moats even rushed for over 200 yds. But he never broke a big one for a score.
What's missing from this year's offense (except against lowly SMU) is THE BIG PLAY. You didn't see it against Hawaii last week and you probably won't see it for the rest of the year.
And our "special teams" have GOT to improve. It seems as if we are constantly faced with driving 80 or 90 yards instead of 40 or 50 yds. Because we are driving so far, we often run out of gas before scoring.
People underestimate special teams play. But between poor field position offensively and allowing big runbacks defensively, it's already cost us at least 2 games this year (Hawaii and UTEP).

Your damn right. I said at the beginning of the year that special teams would cost us this year and unfortunately I was right on. However, its the way we have screwed up special teams that has burned me. Punting to Devon Hester(Miami) and the UTEP dude was inexcusable. I love how Bick came out this week and said they were not going to kick to the Tulsa return guy but "you never know what a kicker is going to do."Originally Posted by HogDawg

Also, I can't believe that after being here for 7? years, Bick cant put together a decent kickoff or punt return team. Everybody else can do it, not us though.
During the summer it was mentioned that Bick was going to take personal control of the special teams.
There ya go....
But instead he hired UTEP's OC from last year. With those two minds at work.....
That's the difference between Bicknell and a real coach. If a kicker screws up and kicks it to the wrong guy after being forewarned by the coach, a REAL COACH will bench the kickers' butt for the rest of the game. Bicknell has never learned how to use his "power of controlling playing time" to his advantage. If somebody screws up, Bicknell just says "oh well", and moves on. He never punishes the player by cutting his playing time (something a player will REALLY pay attention to!) therefore he never gets improved results on the issue.
