Thumbs Up Clint Conque on SFA potential HC final list

    From ZEMS GEMS

    December 10,2004

UPDATE: In researching UCA and Clint Conque, I found some interesting data. Clint's defensive coordinator is Denzil Cox. Coach Cox was DC at McNeese and SFA in the 1980's and early 1990's. Ricky Matt is the defensive secondary coach. Ricky was secondary coach at McNeese under Denzil Cox and Sonny Jackson. SFA fans would be happy to know that former Lumberjack Perry Eliano is now coaching with Conque at UCA. The irony to this whole situation is that UCA could be joining the SLC by 2007. Central Arkansas just applied for 1AA status. BREAKING NEWS: SFA has narrowed the list of coaches to four. The final four came as no surprise to me. Robert McFarland and Todd Whitten were considered front runners from the very beginning. Curtis Luper and Clint Conque round out the final four. The athletic director has done a good job of giving the administration a diverse field in which to choose. Fans clamor for the big names that have been head coaches, but SFA must think long term. Whitten and Conque have been successful at the D2 college level. I am not one to buy into the hype that coaching ability is tiered according to the level you coach . A good coach at D2 can succeed at any level. Luper supplies the administration with a coach with SFA background, a D1A background, and a minority candidate. McFarland and Conque both have McNeese backgrounds, so it would be nice to have someone at SFA without McNeese ties. Ha. It is hard to pull against guys you know.In my opinion, Whitten and Conque are the guys to beat.

According to Hogdawg, Div. II coaches just can't produce winners on any other level. Especially if they are young! This article is wrong!

It's rather ironic that UCA decided to go 1-AA after Conque interviewed for the job at SFA. I heard that Conque wanted UCA to move up after his second year.

Valdosta State and Pittsburg State will be on ESPN Sat. at 3 PM in the D-II championship game. Pittsburg State is undefeated and is averaging 57.7 points/game.

    GO GORILLAS!!!!

Yes, that is Pittsburg State's mascot. A number of my very old and/or deceased relatives graduated from Pittsburg State in Kansas.

What? You can determine a true champion in football by having a playoff? What a great idea!

Playoffs have been proven to be a colossal failure in college basketball, so why would anyone think they would work in football????

HogDawg, The ESPN announcers said during the game today that Hatcher is 31. The opposing coach in today's game is 25 years older than Hatcher and his team was 14-0 coming into the game. Guess who won. It wasn't the old guy.

Re: Clint Conque on SFA potential HC final list

An article in today's Arkansas Democrat-Gazette said Conque had taken himself out of the running for the SFA job and would stay at UCA. He's done a good job since he's been there but 2 of those years he had a good QB, Zack Clark, that transferred from Arkansas. Be interesting to see how they do next year with Clark gone.
