UPDATE: In researching UCA and Clint Conque, I found some interesting data. Clint's defensive coordinator is Denzil Cox. Coach Cox was DC at McNeese and SFA in the 1980's and early 1990's. Ricky Matt is the defensive secondary coach. Ricky was secondary coach at McNeese under Denzil Cox and Sonny Jackson. SFA fans would be happy to know that former Lumberjack Perry Eliano is now coaching with Conque at UCA. The irony to this whole situation is that UCA could be joining the SLC by 2007. Central Arkansas just applied for 1AA status. BREAKING NEWS: SFA has narrowed the list of coaches to four. The final four came as no surprise to me. Robert McFarland and Todd Whitten were considered front runners from the very beginning. Curtis Luper and Clint Conque round out the final four. The athletic director has done a good job of giving the administration a diverse field in which to choose. Fans clamor for the big names that have been head coaches, but SFA must think long term. Whitten and Conque have been successful at the D2 college level. I am not one to buy into the hype that coaching ability is tiered according to the level you coach . A good coach at D2 can succeed at any level. Luper supplies the administration with a coach with SFA background, a D1A background, and a minority candidate. McFarland and Conque both have McNeese backgrounds, so it would be nice to have someone at SFA without McNeese ties. Ha. It is hard to pull against guys you know.In my opinion, Whitten and Conque are the guys to beat.
