Warning MIKE DETILLIER QUOTE ON RYAN MOATS

Last night, I called in the Mike Detillier/Buddy Diliberto show on WWL 870 AM New Orleans, and asked about Ryan Moats draft status.

For those of you who aren't familiar with Detillier, he's a notable draft analyst from south Louisiana, viewed in the same class as Mel Kiper of ESPN.
Mike D. has owned and operated his own private scouting service since 1986. He has also published his "M&D Draft Report " since 86. Mike's private scouting service and comments on the college and professional game have landed him regular appearances on radio and television stations across the country.

Here's the transcript of the phone call (quotes are about 90% exact):

Chris: "I keep hearing reports out of north Louisiana that junior Louisiana Tech running back Ryan Moats is looking at making himself eligible for the draft. Where do you think he will go?"

Mike: "I'd say, please Ryan, stay in school. Look, he's a teriffic little running back in college. There's going to be some questions on his size and durability. A highly rated junior already just declared yesterday, NC State's T.A. McClendon. I'd tell him to stay at Tech for his senior year."

Chris: "If you had to pick a ballpark round he'd go?"

    Mike: "Late round."
    ---

Any of you out there heard the show last night?

Damn, nobody has any comments on this thread.

Can I at least get some rep points for using up 57 daytime minutes on my Cingular plan?

I would guess his advice is good advice to take but from what I know I'm afraid it is too late to take it. I really think he could improve his stock by a couple of rounds if he came back next year and entered as a SR apparently this guy agrees. I will give you some rep points for making the call.

The money to be made in the NFL is in the signing bonus! Moats will not get a decent signing bonus unless he is drafted in the first two rounds which will not happen! If he goes early he will cost himself a million or two dollars!

I don't care if he goes are does not go! These are just the facts. Maybe Mr. Magee could set up his family so he can stay at Tech!

Everybody seems to think this is the case. I do, but I would also find it difficult to come back and take the beating he's taken this year. And, if he's in a tight spot for cash, the draft makes sense to him. I think he needs to sit down and have a long talk with someone who can explain the signing bonus difference if he waits. You think he'd of stayed if JBIII would've left? I do.

JOHNNY-if you think he took a beating this year, wait till the NFL..............The guy is a RUNNING BACK! RB's are supposed to RUN the ball, take beatings, dish out punishment, score TD's!!!

I agree 100%, I'm just saying I can understand why he could justify leaving. I wouldn't do it, but you gotta do what you gotta do. I'd stick around and make an extra million or two, but I run like a wounded duck...so nobody's asking me to stay.

By the way, I think Moats did his share of dishing out punishment, taking beatings, and running the ball. We all know he scored his share of TD's. I think he'll do alright with some good coaching and a good OL. I wouldn't write him off as too small and weak just yet. He should definitely stay, but I wouldn't be surprised if he turns a few heads.

Re: MIKE DETILLIER QUOTE ON RYAN MOATS

The best scenario for Ryan is to come back and us run an offensive scheme where he gets 20 to 25 touches a game with 6 or 7 of those being swing passes in the flat. Then if he shows good productivity, durability, and pass catching ability, it will go a long way to answering some of the nagging doubts people have. He would be considered a great 3rd down back who could be an every down back.

Re: MIKE DETILLIER QUOTE ON RYAN MOATS

I agree DAG and we should make it a priority to do what Auburn did and not wear out either RB this season and give Franklin 10-15 carries a game along with Moats 20-25 and be set. I would like for us to do it while running a more wide open attack but I don't think that will be an option unless Ryan changes his mind all of a sudden.

Re: MIKE DETILLIER QUOTE ON RYAN MOATS

It should all come down to someone Ryan trusts giving him advice....the "makes sense" summary to me is this: If an RB out of a 2nd Tier Div I school DID NOT make at least 3rd All American, he doesn't have a good shot at an early draft round.

I think he has a great shot at making it in the pros. He's the real deal, no doubt, but, I think he is risking not getting drafted AT ALL if he comes out. There was a first team all SEC LB at LSU a few years ago who came out early and, o'h by the way, didn't get drafted. These bad things can happen to good kids.

If I were advising him, I'd advise him to stay put. If I weren't such a Tech hack, I'd probably consider advising him to go to a top tier I-AA school and get plenty of quality playing time. He's likely to find a MUCH better offensive coordinator at a Montana or a Valdosta State. Ooops...did I say that? Was that my outside voice?

    Never mind.

Go Dawgs! Only 8.5 more months until we get to endure another season of Bicknell ball!

If JB3 is our coach next year Ryan should go pro regardless of where he would get drafted. Ryan playing for JB3 only increases his chance of a career ending injury. If JB3 is back, maybe Ryan should transfer to a 1-AA school.

That's the crux of the matter...I wouldn't want to come back and play for him.
