    BSU's incentives for head coach

This may be old news (I've been in China visiting customers) from BSU's president regarding coach Dan Hawkins' new contract incentives.

"Dan Hawkins is a class act who has not only produced an unbeatable football team, but who has also served as an outstanding ambassador for Idaho, the city of Boise, and Boise State University." President Bob Kustra said. "His integrity and the standards of excellence that he sets for himself and his players are genuine and will continue to serve to advance the reputation of not only the football and athletic programs at Boise State, but also the academic and research programs that make this such a great University."

If Boise State wins six or seven games, Hawkins will receive a five percent raise. Eight or nine wins guarantees a 10 percent raise, while winning 10 or more games gives Hawkins a 15 percent raise. Hawkins will receive 1/12th of his salary if Boise State finishes in the Top 25, while he will get a additional $10,000 bonus if the Broncos finish in the Top 10. The contract also give Hawkins 1/12th of his salary bonus for a WAC conference championship and a five percent bonus for a bowl appearance without a conference championship.

The only criticism I have of Hawkins' contract is with the "Top 10" bonus. Only $10,000 for finishing in the Top 10? That's a rip. That sounds like a "baby bonus" that Oakes and Reneau would pay.

It takes allot for a non BCS school to finish in the Top 10. That kind of performance should be rewarded handsomely. I want my guy working his ass off to reach the Top 10. A Top 10 finish ought to be worth about $50,000.

A $50,000 bonus might put a stop to those bone head play calls that Bicknell --or whomever-- makes at Tech with such regularity. With a bonus like that, the head coach will take responsibility for ALL the calls and not pass the buck.

Looks like they have a plan for rewarding a winner which leads me to believe they probably have a plan for their athletic facilities and program...hmmmm
They'll probably enclose the stadium after this year, probably attract a few more students that would have gone to Idaho or across the line to Washington. Could winning athletic programs with even more financial university support be another avenue of recruiting non-athletes. Mr. Reneau is the one who needs to come out and set a timeline for Tech Athletics move to the next level. He needs to allocate more funding to the athletic side now and if he can't or won't or doesn't know how to then we need to find someone who does.

Perhaps Hawkins doesn't need all that much money as motiviation to get to the top 10, but $10K does seem low. The guy seems to have it all figured out.

Heck, let's give JBIII a $10K bonus to just make it to the top 50 this next season.

Not all of the incentives have been listed. If he stays until 2008, he gets a $300,000 bonus. If he stays until 2010, he receives another $150,000.

I am sure the 10k bonus for finishing in the top 10 is in addition to the 1/12th raise for finishing in the top 25 and another 1/12th for winning the WAC which would have to happen for him to put BSU in the top 10. And that amounts to a lot of money and incentive to finish in the top 10, more than 10K.

The thing that I love about this contract is that it rewards the coach for success and loyalty. That is two things that our program sorely lacks.
