I have a book shelf full of used text books from mine and my wife's days at Tech. Good dust collectors.
Thanks for that link. I think I can use it in my ethics class.
Book sellers are pretty shady. They offer profs at big schools huge dollars to "review" a book -- while making it obvious that a positive review that includes adaptation is absolutely expected (I've read of payouts as high as $4000 -- for some profs that could be about two months pay)
The revision treadmill is just ridiculous. They are often coming out with new revisions every year that barely have any changes. One of the big factors in that is trying to prevent buybacks.
One of their newest "add ons" has been a little computer device that lets students "vote" in class on different issues. It's a remote with a multiple choice selector. Students get one "free" when they buy a new book, but a resold book won't work.
i still get angry when i am reminded of this. just an example of the nonsense: i had a textbook originally written in the 1930's. my dad had the same textbook when he was at Tech. he took the class in the early 80's; i took it in 1999. his book was the 3rd edition. mine was the 7th. they went over 50 years only updating it twice, but they had to update it 4 times in less than a generation! grrrr!
depending on the subject, updating might be important.
However, most appear to be ripoffs.
Aub, calculus ain't changed much since the Greeks were running around in togas! Now, history...it changes every day!
I'm an asshole! What's your excuse?
Actually, calculus was invented by Newton in the 1600s.
But your point stands.
