I really think this is nothing more than a ploy to get the bonus up for posing in Playboy and increased rights fees for the adult-oriented movie that will follow -

Stacy Johnson/Chuck Klien just has a "porn" ring to it...
    ''Don't be a bad dagh..."

Re: Stacy Johnson Klein Placed on Administrative Leave

I know I'm a little late asking this question, but I just read this thread (Tuesday Feb. 22).

The articles never mention which restaurant she attended when she caused the scene in Ruston. Where was it? Did she get drunk at Sundown and refuse to pay for a roast beef po-boy? Did she get pepper-sprayed at Rabb's for starting a bar fight?

Whatever it was, it must have been pretty bad if the manager called the cops.

Nevermind. I just read a few other threads.

Geez,...what a lunatic. It would have been a much better story if the owner of Ponchatoulas had kicked her ass.

I haven't seen it on the main page yet. That is surprising. They usually cover things like this. It is on the message boards, though.

I like Dwaynes explanation the best.

    New Details About Coach's Meeting
Action News has learned new details about what school officials and coach Stacy Johnson-Klein discussed when they met behind closed doors on Tuesday.

    VIDEO: Watch This Story

Stacy Johnson-Klein met with university administrators for close to three hours on Tuesday.

Johnson-Klein's attorney, Warren Paboojian, recently received a fax from Fresno State outlining team travel and violations of university policy, as areas involved in the review of the coaches actions.

Action News has learned that during Tuesday's meeting with university administrators, the coach was questioned about expense accounts on team road trips.

The review of Johnson-Klein's alleged violation of university policy is looking into whether the coach sought and received more money for meals than what they actually cost.

Sources knowledgeable about such matters say the university has a series of checks and balances to red-flag fraudulent expense requests and reimbursement requests, including personal interviews with coaches after trips, spot checks by the university and by outside CPAs.

Sources say the bulk of the review of the coaches actions has been conducted by the office of the California State University Chancellor in Long Beach. It's important to note that these are only accusations. The university will not comment on what, if any, evidence they have of wrongdoing.

John Branch @ the Fresno Bee thinks sjk is toast:

Johnson-Klein should realize by now: This separation is final

By John Branch / The Fresno Bee

    (Updated Thursday, February 24, 2005, 5:50 AM)

The most interesting news from Tuesday's meeting between Fresno State officials and Stacy Johnson-Klein didn't come from the coach, the administration or the person who thought the meeting needed the protection of eight cops.

"If she's not reinstated," Warren Paboojian said, "I'm going to be surprised."

    That makes one of us.

Johnson-Klein will not be reinstated. She will not coach at Fresno State again. There isn't a scenario in which her return is plausible. Johnson-Klein might know this. She should.

What she and Paboojian should do now is exactly what they're doing — discredit the allegations that led to her suspension Feb. 9 and keep Johnson-Klein's reputation and public perception as intact as possible.

    So far, so good.

She'll need that reputation preserved in order to find another coaching job.

This isn't to suggest Johnson-Klein is guilty of everything the university believes she might have done to warrant the investigation.

It's just that this thing has gone far enough that Fresno State and Johnson-Klein can't work together again. The relationship, by now, is irreparable.

Trying to pretend the past two weeks didn't happen is like gluing a shattered crystal vase.

Reinstatement is a tricky deal. The school wanted Johnson-Klein removed immediately from the team, telling her not to have any contact with anyone on it — a directive disobeyed almost immediately.

Such drastic action by Fresno State, as with any suspension, tells you the university believes Johnson-Klein's mere presence as head coach is a risk to the investigation, the team or the university as a whole.

The school can't come back and say, "Never mind. We're all cool."

It's too late for "never mind." We're way past "we're cool."

By now, there can't be any trust left between Johnson-Klein and her direct chain of command.

    None.

Associate athletic director Randy Welniak, athletic director Scott Johnson and school president John Welty were the ones who found reason to put Johnson-Klein on administrative leave.

If Johnson-Klein ends up on the right side of this, the public exile her superiors put her through becomes all the more unforgivable and the relationships that much more irreconcilable.

And if you picture a situation in which Johnson-Klein returns while some combination of Welniak, Johnson and Welty are out of jobs, well, you haven't been paying attention to Fresno State long enough.

But there's more to Johnson-Klein's predicament than the tattered relations with her bosses.

Unfortunately for her, there isn't a sign that anyone on the women's basketball team — staff or players — is clamoring for her return.

In the past two weeks, almost everyone in the program has been offered a chance to comment on Johnson-Klein's situation, maybe offer words of encouragement.

    No one has.

The theme of the few public statements made is that these student-athletes and coaches trust the administration to do the right thing — an unusual vote of confidence at Fresno State.

Several former players and staff members have been offered similar chances. No one is leading a "Save Stacy" brigade.

Combine those clues with the ones Johnson-Klein dropped in the e-mail she sent to players the night she was suspended. Johnson-Klein told players she didn't know morale was so low or that players were mad and thought they were treated unfairly.

"For each of you that I recruited, I ask you to remember the courtship. The friendship," Johnson-Klein wrote in the letter's postscript. "For each of you seniors. You were always mine, I had no idea you were just surviving or that you were hurting."

For now, all of Johnson-Klein's support seems to be from the public. And when it comes to reinstatement, you need more than that.

The latest and biggest case of a college head coach being suspended, then reinstated, involved Colorado football coach Gary Barnett.

He was placed on leave amid a recruiting scandal that revolved around allegations that recruits were getting sex, often forcefully. After several months, with some rewritten policies and no formal charges filed by the accusers, Barnett was reinstated.

The loyalties in that case are almost polar opposite to what is happening with Johnson-Klein.

Barnett was crucified in the court of public opinion, at least initially. The public was the catalyst for his suspension by the school.

But most of Barnett's bosses, staff and players stood beside him all along, even publicly.

For Johnson-Klein, it was something far more internal that led to her suspension. The administration led the way. Her team is sitting by idly.

That's why it seems impossible Johnson-Klein could slide back into her job. Most of her allies seem to be those who, professionally, know her the least.

    Coach's staffers planned to leave

Bulldogs assistants report dissatisfaction under Johnson-Klein.

By Jeff Davis / The Fresno Bee

    (Updated Friday, February 25, 2005, 5:54 AM)

The top four members of Stacy Johnson-Klein's staff had decided to leave the program at season's end, even before the Fresno State women's basketball coach was suspended.

Assistant coaches Adrian Wiggins, Drew Champagne and Calamity McEntire, plus director of operations Nathaniel Meraz all said Thursday that they had become uncomfortable working under Johnson-Klein and would be happier working elsewhere, for someone else.

Each planned to quit when the season ended, regardless of whether they had other jobs lined up.

"We were 10-1 and I was on the hotel balcony in Hawaii and I'm looking out over the ocean, and I could not convince myself that I would allow my child to play under these circumstances," said Wiggins, named the interim head coach after Johnson-Klein was placed on paid administrative leave Feb. 9.

None of the staff members would be specific when asked what made them want to leave the program.

At least one Bulldogs player, freshman guard Tierre Wilson, said Thursday that she would quit the team if Johnson-Klein returned as coach.

"I just don't want to go through what we've gone through with her," Wilson said. "I wouldn't want to stay, even if things changed."

The school is continuing its investigation into a series of alleged rules violations committed by Johnson-Klein. The university has said it won't comment on the investigation. The staff members declined to discuss anything having to do directly with the investigation.

The coach met with university officials Tuesday for the first time since her suspension. Among the points discussed at the 2 1/2-hour meeting, said Johnson-Klein's attorney, Warren Paboojian, was an allegation that the coach received painkillers from a player. Paboojian said Johnson-Klein might have taken one pill, but sources told The Bee that she took more — what was left of a nearly full bottle.

Asked Thursday about the number of painkillers Johnson-Klein allegedly took, Wiggins said: "Personally, I believe it's an addictive narcotic, and I would be ignorant to assume it would be only one pill."

Wiggins said he told Johnson-Klein in the weeks before she was suspended that he wouldn't return for another season.

"I told her, as a teacher, you want to be able to look in the mirror and be proud of what you're doing," Wiggins said. "I was not proud.

"Her response was, 'Don't. Please don't. We can make this work, go to a different school. We can try Oklahoma State. We can make it happen.' I said I was not interested."

Wiggins also said he wanted to make it clear he had no designs on Johnson-Klein's job.

"I do not aspire to be the head coach [at Fresno State]. I'd like to get my own job, not someone else's," said Wiggins, who reunited with Johnson-Klein here three years ago after working for her previously at Cameron University in Lawton, Okla.

Johnson-Klein interviewed for the Oklahoma State job three years ago before being hired at Fresno State. Oklahoma State hired Julie Goodenough, whose coaching record there is 23-57.

Johnson-Klein, through Paboojian, said Thursday that she had planned to make changes to her staff at the end of the season.

"She said that prior to her suspension, she was unaware that any of her coaches were going to leave," Paboojian said. "However, she had told Adrian Wiggins in confidence that two of her assistant coaches were not going to be back after the season."

Two of Johnson-Klein's assistants — Brett Frank and Miranda Serna — and her director of basketball operations — Kelsi Bond — resigned at the end of last season, meaning the Fresno State coach, at the time of her suspension, was on the verge of losing seven staff members in two seasons.

Said McEntire: "I wasn't going to work for Stacy. This isn't what I signed up for."

Asked what happened to lead her to that conclusion, McEntire said, "That's what they're investigating."

The university has detailed points of the investigation: Johnson-Klein's allegations of harassment by her supervisors; team travel arrangements; the coach's e-mail to players after school president John Welty's directive not to contact anyone associated with her program; coaches' employment agreements, personal services agreements and compensation under the agreements; responsibilities and relationships of staff and coaches; record keeping of the basketball office; and policy violations.

McEntire said that an incident involving Johnson-Klein during Fresno State's game at Louisiana Tech on Feb. 3 cemented her decision.

"It was something that happened during the game that had to do with myself and Coach Klein and her husband during the game," said McEntire, who would not elaborate.

After the game, Johnson-Klein reportedly told Tech coach Kurt Budke, "I hate my staff."

Fresno State officials called in players and assistant coaches for meetings when they returned from that road trip.

Champagne said he made up his mind to leave in November or December. "I knew that early. At the time, we were winning games, but it didn't feel right. You have to like what you're doing, and I didn't feel that way with a certain person in charge."

Paboojian said Wednesday that Johnson-Klein, who was given clearance to inspect her office Tuesday night after meeting with university officials, discovered a diary planner and personal files missing, including evaluations of her assistant coaches.

Wiggins and Champagne both said they never had been evaluated by the coach.

"They may not have been evaluated," Paboojian said, "but she had some memos and reports and letters regarding assistants and players, and they were missing."

Wiggins said, "I have no knowledge of anything taken from that office." He said using Johnson-Klein's television with a video recorder would be the only reason for an assistant to enter her office.

The assistants declined to discuss anything that has to do directly with the university's investigation. That includes an alleged incident last fall. According to sources, Johnson-Klein asked sophomore guard Chantella Perera whether the player still had any painkillers that were prescribed to her after knee surgery.

Sources said Perera reluctantly gave Johnson-Klein most of the Vicodin prescribed to her. On Thursday, Paboojian reiterated that Johnson-Klein had a Vicodin prescription that had run out and received just one pill from the player.

Perera told a team staff member about the incident Jan. 22, sources said. At least two staff members took the information to an athletic department supervisor Jan. 31.

Perera wouldn't comment on the discrepancy in the stories.

Wiggins said the number of pills matters less than the alleged incident itself. "As in any teacher-student relationship, if that interchange had occurred, or was strongly believed to have occurred, you would immediately want to remove the teacher from that situation, for the teacher's benefit and the student's benefit. I think it was 100% the right thing to do."

Asked whether he believed that was the reason for Johnson-Klein's immediate suspension, Wiggins said, "I believe the university has handled everything in the best interest of the student-athlete, which is why we are here."

Johnson-Klein said early in the university's investigation that one of the topics to be discussed was an alleged racial comment.

Bulldogs guard Wilson acknowledged Thursday that a comment Johnson-Klein made to her during the Jan. 29 game at Nevada was at least one of two racial remarks being investigated by the university.

"I dribbled through my legs and turned the ball over," Wilson said. "Coach said, 'You're not in the ghetto.' That disturbed me. But I don't think it was racial or anything. It was just a dumb remark that came out of her mouth."
