MOBILE, Ala. -- Derek Busby tied for first in individual play Tuesday to lead Louisiana Tech to a third place tie in the Homewood Suites International at Azalea City Golf Course.

Mississippi State captured the tourney title with a 2-under 862 while host school South Alabama finished second at 867, followed by Louisiana Tech and Southern Mississippi with a 7-over 871.

Busby, a junior from , led both days in the tournament, firing in a tournament-low 66 in the first round and following that up with a 71 and 73 to finish with a 6-under 210.

Mississippi State's Joe Deraney tied Busby for individual first place.

"Derek shot a great first round and was 7-under after 36 holes," Tech coach Dr. Jean Hall said. "That really got us going as a team and helped us to our second straight solid performance."

Louisiana Tech finished third in last week's Carter Plantation Intercollegiate in Hammond, La.

"The first two rounds we were at 286 and 2-under as a team," Hall said. "That's the best we've shot as a team in a long time and let's us feel that we're really making some progress. We just have to keep things moving forward."

Tech also had strong showings from sophomore Preston Smith, who finished tied for 12th place with a 2-over 218 and from junior Chad Carter, who tied for 22nd with a 4-over 220.

"Chad has become an important part of our team recently because he's really stepped up his play," Hall said. "He's working very hard this spring and his consistency has really helped us."

Jason Jenkins added a 7-over 223 for the Bulldogs while Chad Bailey rounded out Tech's efforts with a 14-over 230.

Tech returns to the links on Monday when the Bulldogs compete in the First Tee Arkansas-Little Rick Intercollegiate Tournament.

To add to that good news Dr. Hall signed a pair of really talented golfers for next year.

Great to see a growing program.

Hate to have to see Dr. Hall do it all himself without much AthDept support, but he is trying.

    Martie,

He has the FULL support of James Davidson and the entire staff at Squire Creek, he doesn't need the athletic department to prosper.

I know all this, that is why it is so frustrating.

So now we just leave the sports to depend on NON AthDept support to succeed?

I expect our golf program to prosper. With Squire Creek, we are second to no one in offering a golf recruit a place to practice, play, and learn.

We've got a kid coming next year that is probably one of the best high school golfers in the Country. I don't recall his name but I was told this by a VERY reliable source close to the golf program.

Is the golf budget more than $1.50? Sounds like we could do well with a little effort and $$$.
