    Bulldogs Open Spring Workouts Monday

    Posted Mar 27, 2005 15:23:00

RUSTON - Sixth-year Louisiana Tech coach Jack Bicknell and his Bulldog football team will open spring drills Monday at 4 p.m. as the first of 15 workouts is set for the practice fields at the Tech Track and Field Complex.

As in the past, all Louisiana Tech football practices are open to the public.

The Bulldogs will practice in shorts and helmets on Monday and Wednesday before putting on pads for the first time on Friday.

Tech's spring practice schedule includes a scrimmage on Saturday, April 9th at Joe Aillet Stadium as well as the annual Bone Bowl at noon on Saturday, April 16th also at Aillet Stadium.

Bicknell returns only 11 starters from last year's team that posted a 6-6 mark, including five offensive, four defensive and two specialists.

"As a coaching staff, you always look forward to the start of spring practice," Bicknell said. "This year is no different. You cannot emphasize how important the next three and a half weeks are to this team; there is so much we need to accomplish."

Not only will Bicknell have to replace the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year in running back Ryan Moats, who left a year early to enter the upcoming NFL Draft, but Tech will also be orientating three new assistant coaches, including new defensive coordinator John Lovett, wide receiver coach Pete Carmichael Sr. and running backs coach Shelton Gandy.

Perhaps one of the most important phases of spring practice this year will be the transition to a new defensive coordinator.

"Scheme wise we will continue to run a 3-4 on defense," Bicknell said. "However, it's vital that our defensive players become familiar with Coach Lovett. There is always a transition when you bring in a new coordinator, whether offensive or defensive."

Bicknell's returning staff underwent a number of position changes including Greg Malo moving from running backs to outside linebackers and Chris Vaszily moving from wide receivers to tight ends and special teams.

Lovett will coach defensive backs while Randy Bates moves from the defensive backfield to inside linebackers.

Who is #4 at WR? This kid looks real good, has a big body and made some nice catches, he's got to be at least 6-2 or 6-3 200+lbs.

Newman had some very nice receptions as well.

Kubik and Allen are lightyears ahead of the rest of the QB's.(yeah I know, that includes Champion too.)

I think everyone's going to be very happy with Freddie Franklin this year, it appears he's own his way to making us forget about Moats.

Lovett has the D hustling on every down, time will tell if we're any good on that side of the ball though.

88, does Franklin look like he has put on any weight? I guess that mostly gets done in the summer though.

13-at the conclusion of the winter S&C program, Franklin was measured at 5'11.5" & weighed 184 lbs. He is plenty big enough to play for us, or anyone else, & he is a very tough young man. Franklin made much progress in the weight room over the winter.

88-I think #4 is Shane Womack, RS FR WR, who last week measured 6'2.5" & weighed 213. Shane has all the measurables with the only question now being consistent catching of the pill.

    Coach Mick,

What about the Augusta kid at WR that we signed last year? Is he participating in spring drills?

Coach Mick, I heard that Winbush tied the bench press record for defensive lineman at 415(tied with Van Hoy). I know I've already said this, but I think he will be a force to reckon with this season.

We all know that our linebackers are second to none in the conference. What about the secondary? We lost a lot of guys to graduation. I know we signed a lot of juco guys, but will we be good enough since the WAC is known for their passing?

Re: Bulldogs Open Spring Workouts Monday

MAD-Thomas Augusta, RS FR WR, IS participating in spring training--whole lot of speed, not much size (5'11"-160). It will be interesting to see how he pans out.

SPORTKID-no practice today (Tuesday). Practices are usually Monday-Wed-Friday & Saturday. During the week, best time to get out there is around 5 pm. On Sat, practice in the am beginning around 9:30--will be some scrimmage this Saturday.

SOCCDAWG-Quarvay Winbush did bench 415 in last week's testing & measured 6'5"-261 lbs. I know Coach Jackson is expecting big things from him in 05. Incidentally, Jeremy Hamilton benched 445. The secondary is a big concern this spring, as you mentioned. Tramon & Delone Williams, two veterans, should start out as starters at corner; Torrance Hampton & the new JUCO signees will battle for some playing time. Dez Abrams & Bo Cox & Alton Bryant should get first looks at the safety spots with the new JUCO's trying to earn a spot. With Coach Lovett working with the secondary, let's hope his experience pays big dividends right away with a much improved group.

I think Quarvay will surprise a lot of people this year. Good to hear that Lovett is bustin their butts early. I am a fan of the depth chart Reneau then Oakes joke.
