Status of Rattay and McCown?

Both SF and Cleveland drafted QB's yesterday. With Smith being the overall #1 pick, it is clear that SF intends him to be an impact/franchise player. Whether he can accomplish that or not is irrelevant to the future of Rattay. Tim will either become the 2nd stringer at SF, or seek employment elsewhere.

McCown's situation is just as clouded. Dilfer was brought in by the Brownies to be the short-term solution to the QB problem, while they develop a permanent replacement. It is obvious that the Brownies do not see Luke in that role, or they wouldn't have used a high draft choice bringing in another QB. That is NOT to say that McCown can't earn the starting spot someday, only that Cleveland is hedging their bet on Luke.

McMillan picked; McCown traded

The busy day in Berea continued with the selection of David McMillan in the fifth round, 139 overall. McMillan is a defensive end/outside linebacker "tweener" who played collegiately at Kansas.

The Browns previously drafted Oklahoma cornerback Antonio Perkins in the fourth round and traded quarterback Luke McCown to Tampa Bay for a sixth-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.

The Browns now have two sixth-round picks, 139 and 144 overall.

McCown, a fourth-round draft choice last season, became expendable when the Browns drafted Charlie Frye in the third round Saturday night.

McCown started four games last December when a rash of injuries hit the Browns quarterbacks. He completed 48-of-98 passes for 608 yards, throwing four touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Trent Dilfer, Josh Harris and Frye are the remaining quarterbacks on the Browns roster.

Well, that answers the Brownie question about Luke. Probably the best for him in the long run. McCown might be one of those that bounces around the NFL for awhile, until he finally finds that right fit.
