Texas House Bans 'Suggestive' Cheerleading

AUSTIN, Texas - After an alternately comic and fiery debate — punctuated by several lawmakers waving pompons — the state House on Tuesday approved a bill to restrict "overtly sexually suggestive" cheerleading to more ladylike performances.

The bill would give the state education commissioner authority to request that school districts review high school performances.

"Girls can get out and do all of these overly sexually performances and we applaud them, and that's not right," said Democratic Rep. Al Edwards, who filed the legislation.

Edwards argued bawdy performances are a distraction for students resulting in pregnancies, dropouts and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

Ribald performances are not defined in the bill. "Any adult that's been involved with sex in their lives, they know it when they see it," he said.

The bill passed on a 65-56 vote. It still must be approved by the Senate and signed by Republican Gov. Rick Perry.

One critic questioned the legislation's priorities. "Have we done anything about stem cell research to help people who are dying and are sick advance their health? No," said Democratic Rep. Senfronia Thompson. "Have we done anything about the mentally ill, school finance or ethics?"

The American Civil Liberties Union said the measure was unnecessary because state law already prohibits public lewdness by students on or near a school campus.

Maybe not back when we were growing up. But my goodness, the way they shake and thrust their "things" these days is pretty bad. Hey, I don't think even the college and pro cheerleaders do the routines that H.S. girls do over here in Texas. I applaud the Texas House.

I'm not sure what to think about the law. The first problem will be interpretation and the second will be enforcement.

Also, it is my observation that once a law is passed like this, the first thing a person will do is push the limit to see what the limit is. Thus, it may have the opposite effect from what is intended. Finally, will it be a community standard. Houston may think one thing is okay, but Paris may find it lewd. So far, we have not figured out a way to legislate morality.

However, just like the smoking laws limiting where people can smoke, laws which I abhor, the laws get written because people abuse their right to smoke when and where they want. I don't want my steak to smell like your cigarette. I wish that people had the manners to smoke away from my food.

In the same vein, I wish the girls and their sponsors would get a grip on this. These girls have taken their dancing to a point that makes many uncomfortable. It is one thing to see it on a B. Spears or Shakira video in the privacy of the home. It is another to see it at a highschool football game.

My guess is that the statute will either not be enforced or will be found unconstitutional. In the meantime, you will not be seeing my daughters participating in dance lines.

That has been the whole problem with the makeup of this law. I've heard the author on the radio here several times, he has never been able to answer the simple question of how to define unacceptable. In fact, his only response has been, "You'll know it when you see it". Even when pressed further, he parrots, "You'll know it when you see it". Who will know it? You? Me? "You'll just know it when you see it".

Pardon me, but that is about the DUMBEST answer I've ever heard to a direct question and shows me that the legislation was really not thought through very well. You're correct. This "feel good" legislation will never pass the scatocological scrutiny of a court challenge.

Someone please tell these bozos that there is a school finance crisis here, and by the way, the state of Texas is going to run out of water in a few years if some significant infrastructure improvements aren't made. Maybe after they solve some of these REAL problems, they can have some time to try to act like the town council in FOOTLOOSE.

Actually that was my point. I was surprised, as I expected a huge and usually liberal vote, on CNN, leaning toward the State of Texas minding their own business. Especially on an issue such as this one. Interesting.
