Ryan Moats' selection with the 77th overall pick in the third round of last month's NFL Draft was the highest a Louisiana Tech player has been selected since 1999 when Troy Edwards went No. 13 overall to Pittsburgh.

The Bulldogs could have yet another player taken in the upper rounds of the draft next year. Senior offensive guard Aaron Lips, who will be a four-year starter in 2005, has already shown up on many pre-draft lists.

Great Blue North has the 6-5, 309-pounder listed as the No. 1 guard prospect for next season and ESPN.com has him as the No. 4 guard.

"He's a great player and a great kid," Tech coach Jack Bicknell said. "He's everything you want in an offensive lineman; he's tough, he can run and without a doubt will be one of the leaders of the offense next year."

Lavergne heads north: Former Tech offensive tackle Damian Lavergne has surfaced in the Canadian Football League, signing a contract with the Toronto Argonauts.

The 6-8, 335-pound Lavergne played three seasons at Tech and, following the 2001 campaign, was named first-team All-Western Athletic Conference.

Lavergne signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2002, but hurt his knee in training camp and was put on injured reserve. Lavergne went to camp with the Eagles last year but was cut.

Smith excelling in Europe: Former Tech running back Joe Smith is enjoying some success in NFL Europe.

Smith, who led Tech in rushing in 2001 (874
    yards) and 2002 (1
,216 yards), currently leads NFL Europe in rushing. Smith, playing for the Rhein Fire, has rushed for 649 yards and three touchdowns.

Smith originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 2003 with Jacksonville but was released in August of 2004. He spent a week on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad in '04 before being released.

He signed with Tennessee in January of this year and was allocated to NFL Europe.

Cage, Gonzalez sign: Former Tech football players Jemelle Cage and Adrian Gonzalez have signed with NFL teams.

Cage, a defensive tackle, led the Bulldogs in sacks last year and ranked fourth in the WAC with 7½.

Gonzalez was a two-year starter on the offensive line at right guard and right tackle the last two seasons. He has signed with the Washington Redskins.

Frierson cut: Former Lady Techster standout Trina Frierson has been released by the Seattle Storm. Frierson, a 2004 second-round selection, was waived May 12 after struggling in camp with a hamstring injury.

Frierson missed most of the 2004 season while recovering from knee surgery.
