bennett arrived on campus for a couple of days in fall practice before leaving. he never enrolled in classes and sat out the year. then he signed with texas a&m and will be an incoming freshman this year. his younger brother, martellus, is the top tight end in the nation and has also declared for the nba draft. martellus also signed with a&m.

russell was a prop and i don't know if he ever made it to campus. can anyone help me out here? we'll be certain in the fall.

scott was going to be a prop, but he never made it to campus. he was picked in the last round of last year's baseball draft and ended up signing a professional contract. most 50th rounders don't end up panning out, so he might be one that shows up in college football in a couple of years. i hope our coaches stay in contact with him.

andre is a good kid, but he didn't take care of his business in the classroom. he wasn't going to help us at quarterback but would have made the switch to receiver for spring practice. unfortunately he was gone before that happened.

i don't know tate's story as well as some people might, but he was gone quickly because of some disciplinary problems.

so that makes four and maybe five that didn't last the first year. while that's not good, it isn't necessarily different from any other program in the country. we lost one kid who was a steal (bennett), another who didn't help us at his primary position (daniel), a third that we have no idea how good he would have been because he messed up before his career started (stewart) and either one or two props that we just took a chance on any way.

    Re: Question about 2004 class

For those that remain, 18 will contibute either prominently this year or in the next two years & 14 of those are HS recruits:

RB-Franklin & Dillard or Dillard & Franklin (your preference)
    WR-Chambers & Augusta & Womack
LB-Barry Robertson & Matt Butler (also a pretty fair punter) & Quin Harris
    DL-White & Collins & Day
OL-these are all RS FR that Coach Perot thinks a great deal of-Bill Jones & Ryan Snell & David Accardo & Ben Harris
    K-Danny Horwedel

TWO PROPS-Naquin (S-LB) & Reddick (LB)-two fine athletes who will carve out a niche' for themselves, perhaps in 05.

I hope we might concentrate on these 18 rather than the few that have either not showed or departed.

Mickey, I have not seen anything on LB Crosby. I know he played a good bit last yr. as a true freshman on Special teams as well a LB. You did not mention him. Is he still in the program?

    Re: Question about 2004 class

BD-I am sorry, I forgot about Anthony Crosby. He suffered an injury (dislocated shoulder) in early spring practice. I believe he is going to be a very good LB for us in the future, just hard for him to get some playing time this year because we are stacked with a good number of experienced LB's. Anthony is one of the strongest players we have & should be a big plus for us in the future. His shoulder has been surgically repaired & he should be full go in August.

    Re: Question about 2004 class

Somewhat interesting to note is that as of the end of spring training, only 2 of our numerous JUCO recruits are set to start: Barry Robertson, LB, the leader of our defense & Seneca Chambers, one of the 3 WR's listed as starters. Several others are due for backup roles including Eddie White (DE), Sammie Collins (DE), Oren Lewis (NT), Jason Anthony (LB), Bo Cox (LB-DB), Quincy Hicks (DB-LB), Shelton Richardson (TE-RB), & Jacob Peeler (OC). In addition, we are counting on the two JUCO CB's arriving this fall to really help us & I sure hope they will.

    Re: Question about 2004 class

Thanks for the scoop, Mick. This 2004 class is shaping up to be a good one. We already heard many of their names called last year. Looking forward to seeing more contributions from them this year. Especially our RB tandem and young LB's.

Any hope in the NCAA bumping up the football schedule to start in July????

Several others are due for backup roles including Eddie White (DE), Sammie Collins (DE), Oren Lewis (NT), Jason Anthony (LB), Bo Cox (LB-DB), Quincy Hicks (DB-LB), Shelton Richardson (TE-RB), & Jacob Peeler (OC). In addition, we are counting on the two JUCO CB's arriving this fall to really help us & I sure hope they will.
Hey Mick.....is Barry Robertson really 6-3, 240 lbs??? He looks smaller than that to me.

I'm not trying to raise a stink.....but I remember Robertson getting blown off the line of scrimmage a few times last year (in one game in particular). He just seemed smaller than 6-3, 240. And before anyone sends "overprotective" posts, let me just say that I AGREE that Robertson will probably be a fine linebacker for us this year ...but I was just wondering if his "size" has been exxagerated.
