Talks about Fresno States athletic budget which was interesting, but I found towards the end of the article it says that schools in the MAC have students pay a $250 activity fee....which $200 of it goes to the athletic budget....WOW!!!! Anyway...enjoy!

That is true, the last increase a $25 total increase and $10 goes to Athletics. I actually helped by working on that referendum. The problem that we encountered after the increase was passed, is that we found out that it was illegal for the athletic dept. to get anymore money each year from the school. There was a state law saying that every state school could only give a certain amount of money to athletics out of their state-funded budget. But before that increase happened two years ago there hadn't been an increase in some 12 years for the athletic dept. So that $10 from each student each quarter is put in a side fund, which we have to find a way to legally tap into it to spend the money.

Why not start "charging" all students $10 for season tickets to football games. Want 'em or not, they've got 'em. That way the money isn't from the school, it is from ticket sales.

Smart man. That must be why you get paid the big bucks. Or maybe why you work for an athletic department. Or maybe both.

If the registrar can't collect it and send it to athletics, we might has well send players to dorm rooms to collect protection money. Then some of you big ol boys would have to insist they hand it over for projects to benefit athletics or the sports bars and pizza joints would get it all!

Seriously, what happened to the effort to sell student-priced memberships to Champs. And what happened to the kids' Champs plan?

Aub, I spent a hell of a lot of time putting together a plan for CHAMPS, very similar to the Clemson IPTAY program. Unfortunately, Jim Oakes was not interested in anything associated with the idea. I have no idea why, but my intent was to start getting the younger kids involved in the CHAMPS program, and, just maybe, they would continue to be involved for a very long time. Jim seems to think he has all the bases covered, and is not very open to any suggestions to bringing in money, by any means. I am really getting disgusted with the whole mess!!! I can just see a whole bunch of 8 & Under kids on the field at halftime, getting recognition for their CHAMPS memberships. Just think what every kid still sitting in the stands would make their dad do before the next game????? Of course, join CHAMPS! Jim doesn't get it!!! So Sad!

That was a VERY interesting article!!!!!!
Although......(not to begin preaching or anything.....well ok..maybe for just a minute.......let me get my soap box out)......
OK.....Ladies and Gentlemen........CHANGE, especially of this magnitude, is always something that must be implemented from the top down!!
It also must represent a commitment that no matter what is given a chance to evolve......
There WILL be times of uncertainity and a few dead ends encountered along the way, but if the commitiment is true, then change is just a matter of time.

It all starts with an ambitious vision of where we want to be and a list of clear, realistic and measurable objectives on how we are going to get there and commit!!!!
And last but not least.......FEEDBACK, FEEDBACK, FEEDBACK to all you represent.....
    Ok...I'm off my box.... C-ya

    Re: interesting article.......

The student activity fee figures were very frustrating to see when looking at MAC schools in the CUSA expansion discussion. Almost all of the Ohio MAC schools that were mentioned as possible CUSA candidates fund from around 50% to over 60% of their athletic budgets directly from student fees.

As successful at Miami was in the MAC in 2003-2004, Tech was within a few thousand of Miami's total athletic revenues when all student fees and state funding are eliminated. The difference...Tech was hamstrung by Louisiana's $2.678 million state funding cap for 2003-2004 while Miami collected $9.384 million in student activity fees for athletics. Student fees accounted for over 64% of Miami's total athletic revenues, but Miami still finished in the red by over $300K, Tech's state funding percentage out of total athletic revenues was only 34% for 2003-2004.

The Board of Regents' rules put Tech and other Louisiana universities at a competitive disadvantage. Those rules should be changed to at least allow a certain amount if not all student-approved athletic fees to be used for athletics without counting against the state funding cap amount.

Who are the key congress members we need to contact to get that changed?

There is a student level for CHAMPS ($25).

Not sure what the benefits are.
