Stros take a doubleheader from the Pirates 9-3 and 6-4. Puts them back over .500 and in position for a 4 game sweep tomorrow. Nice rebound from the St. Louis sweep.

Come on now, the Braves arent nearly as bad, the yankees buy their championships, the braves talent is homegrown for the most part. The Jones boys, Smoltz, Ramirez, Estrada, Johnson, Langerhans, LaRoche all came up through the organization. Plus ya gotta love a team that wins with so many rookies and one senior citizen

And Bobby Cox is the best manager in baseball

    For the regular season -

He is arguably one of the worst in a 5 or 7 game series format -

Watch out for the Cubs if that staff gets healthy - they have hovered within 3 games of the wildcard all year and that pitching staff can take anyone out in a short series -

Smoltz came over in the Doyle Alexander trade with the Tigers and Estrada came over in the Millwood trade to the Phillies.
But I will say that compared to most other MLB teams, the Braves develop from within pretty well.

I personally feel that Cox is not a good manager, that the farm system develops players that while they might not be all-stars, they come up and are fundamentally sound which puts them light years ahead of more talented players from other teams. Plus Cox chokes in the play-offs. If anyone should get kudos it Leo Mazzone the pitching coach.

I agree. They win in spite of Cox not because of him.

Yeh, I have never been a big Cox fan, although he must do something fairly well. I must concede that I dont know what it is. Now, Mazzone is the man. Did you see him last year with Hampton and Jaret Wright? If their mechanics messed up for 2 pitches and they started throwing balls, Mazzone was out to the mound and telling them what they were doing wrong. Next thing you know, they start throwing strikes again. That is talent that cannot be replaced and is very hard to learn. He has a gift. How else could you explain guys like Wright, Hammond, Hampton, etc. turning their careers around there? That is why I was perplexed as to why Danny Kolb was so terrible this year. I though he would be an elite closer because he was good with the Brew Crew last year, and with Mazzone coaching him, I thought he would be awesome. It didnt pan out because he cant throw strikes this year.

    Go Stros!!!!!!!

Dunn would be a good acquisition. You know why? He is on base a lot. He scores a lot of runs because he walks and has decent speed. You do have to get around his crappy average and Ks. The Stros need baserunners. It keeps pressure on the pitcher, and the Stros just dont put a lot of guys on base outside of the top 4. Lane is hitting for the same average as Dunn but with a lot less power and walks. Dunn will never be great until he can hit for average, but he is a very good option because of his power, walks, and decent speed.

Yeh, he has the same problem a lot of sinker ballers run into, tons of walks. He just has too many and cant get around them this year. Guys arent swinging at bad pitches against him, then he either walks them or has to throw one down peach street. He needs to be able to throw that sinker for strikes and not in the dirt.

Let's keep this Astros thread going. Stros win today 8-0. 4 game sweep of the Pirates. Petite scatters 5 hits over 7 innings to get the win. Berkman goes 3 for 3 including a home run and a double. Critical series next at Washington. This series will go a long way to determining the wild card. A Houston sweep knocks the sails out of the Nationals. Keep it going Stros.

Dont forget Bobby was the GM in the late 80s when the talent that would send the Braves to the post season was assembled(Justice, Glavine, Lopez, C Jones). And yes, Smoltz and Estrada were traded for, but most thought both trades were not in the Braves favor. Estrada had played very few games in the majors, the point was they usually dont sign big name free agents, they draft good and sign role players. Bobby was the guy that wanted Chipper Jones over Todd Van Popple when most of the organization thought they needed the pitcher. 2,000 wins, 3 time manager of the year, 13 Straight Division titles, a world series. I'd take that. Plus he was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on May 21(a very good day)
