    Palmeiro Suspended

I am not surprised by this news, but Rafael has been suspended for 10 games because of steroid abuse. I have always liked Rafael, but I suspected him of using steroids. All of the people that think that he shouldnt make the Hall of Fame will come out in full force now. The game of baseball is already tainted in so many different ways, I am not going to lose that much more respect for it than I already have.

I'm glad he got caught. I'm sure the hall will be filled with roid heads before the end of things...I don't have much respect for the majors anymore, so this certainly doesn't change my feelings about it.

Like Jimmy said, using steriods is like pretending to be retarded in the special olympics.

I had no doubts about ole Raffy. He had no power in the minors, along with his other Ranger buddies Sammy Sosa and Juan Gone. Oh yeh, and his doodle is already limp at 40. Sucking all of the juice out through steroids seems to do that to some guys.

I agree! That's how we all knew he was probably on roids. Didn't he advertise for Viagra? Hey, 2 + 2 still equals 4 most days of the week.

As far as I'm concerned the record is still 61. Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, and anyone else found to be using steroids should be ineligible for the Hall of Fame and suspended from baseball.

I think this was mainly bad judgement by Palmeiro - and I just don't think he would have been adamnant in front of the Committee - he has ALWAYS been known as a class act and pretty strait forward ball player -

Just don't see the classic roid abuse tale-tale signs in his physique - i.e. Bonds, McGuire, Giambi, Conseco, etal -

Granted - its no excuse, but this cat could hit BB's in a dark room blindfolded when he came out of Moo U -

Poor judgement, by not ASKING what was in something a team mate was giving him YES - classic abuser - NO -

Also makes you WONDER if Conseco passed on a few "supplements" to Raffie in TX and KNEW they were not kosher and then fess up when he gave them to him - i.e. that's why he wrote what he did in his book -

And lets face baseball did NOT help matters here by delaying the announcement - if Palmeiro is smart, he comes out and says what the supplement was (GNC?) and who gave it to him - its basically the only way he can save face right now -

    Re: Palmeiro Suspended

Found a site with some pretty funny jokes about current events in sports. among them:

After MLB came down with its most noticeable steroid penalty to date, Barry Bonds commented "Ummm.. OUCH! My knee... UGHHH... I think I'm done for this season guys. OWWWW. No seriously, it really, really hurts."

Bonds then walked away knocking over several vases with his forehead and continued, "Sorry, I'd clean that up but... ugh... it really hurts to walk."

Gotta disagree with you Dwayne. I think Palmerio has cheated and I think all you have to do is looks at his history(oh, and his positive drug test) to prove it.

As you say, he could always hit but he was a singles and sometimes double hitter in college, same in the minor leagues, and a singles and doubles hitter in Chicago when he came up. He was let go(basically) because they didnt think he would produce enough power at 1st base. This wasnt when he was 18 or 19 and still filling out and developing...this was when he was in his early and mid 20's.

Not until he turned 27 did he hit more than 14 homeruns in a season, his 2nd with Texas. His homerun numbers really took off in 1993, Jose Canseco 's first full year in Texas(Canseco actually arrived in Texas in late 92)...Just enough time for the steriod cocktails to take full effect.

Did Palmeiro juice as much as Bonds, McGuire, your Brady Anderson's, your Canseco's? Probably not, but I wouldnt bet against it either. I cant think of any player EVER who has hit 50 homers at age 27, then got 'hot' and hit over 500 after age 27. Just doesnt happen. There is not a doubt in my mind that he started using steriods in the early 90's, the same time ALOT of players started using.

His physique? Steriods can make you look just about anyway you want them to. They are misunderstood. Yes, everything equal they will bulk you up but not as much as people think unless you train with the weights in a certain way. Thats why sprinters, bikers, pitchers, and others take them...You can still keep your flexibility if you know what you are doing.

Palmeiro probably choose not to hit the weights in combination with the drugs like Bonds and McGuire did. But they still make you stronger, quicker, have more stamina, recover from injuries quicker, etc.... at least in the short term. I think Palmeiro may have even purposly avoided weight training BECAUSE he was on the juice. Besides, I remember when he was a skinny kid in Chicago...he definitely got bigger when he got to Texas, just not the way Bonds or McGuire did.

As far as saving face now, its not going to happen. If he comes out and says that he took something from GNC, well, thats a joke. He lied to Congress and the American people.

It's kind of like Pete Rose. He swore up and down that he didnt do anything wrong. Then, when faced with the proof, it was too late to save face.

I agree with Alta. I always thought Palmeiro roided. As I stated, I have heard that Palmeiro, Sosa, and Juan Gone all came up through the minors for many years not hitting many homers. I know it takes some time to adjust to the wood, but not that long. Then, they all start jacking bombs and the least of those three ahs 430 HR (Gone). There is not doubt they all juiced. Juan Gone hasnt played a full season in 3 years because of health problems, Sammy--well look at this season and I rest my case, and Palmeiro--caught with his hand in the cookie jar at a terrible time. I dont even know why he is still on them, unless he though he needed them to help the struggling Os. He already has 3000 hits and 570 HRs, he had nothing left to prove.

The thing that always blows me away is how people put up such a stink on numbers. Statistics is the most overrated thing about sports these days. But since we're on this subject, his total was less in 87, but his HR/AB was actually a half AB less. He only hit 14 HR's, but that was in just over 200 AB's. (1 HR in 15.78 AB's) The year that people ASS-U-ME that he started taking roids was in 93 when he hit 37 in 600 AB's. (1 HR in 16.14 AB's) Another thing to be careful of is who is in the lineup before him and after him. Very few hitters are the same with mediocre hitters around him instead of more power. For Example, If you are a pitcher, going against the Red Sox, with David Ortiz in the box. You have a 1 run lead and you NEED an out now, and you look over in the on-deck circle and look at Manny Ramirez. Now picture if they would have traded him, and you look over and see.......... i don't know... Gabe Kapler, Bill Mueller, or Trot Nixon. Are you going to pitch to Ortiz?? If so... don't quit your day job.. cause baseball manager isn't for you.

Excellent points, Doc, but you failed to mention what he did the next two years after that decent power year. He hit 16 bombs over 1139 ABs. That comes to a bomb every 71.2 ABs, then he only hit 14 the next year over the whole season. I think Raffy saw the boat passing him by after pitchers learned how to overpower him, so he had to take a little something to even the playing field (pardon the pun).
