John Humble, a jury member, said that people were against the idea because the proposed venue might be prone to flooding and the local infrastructure could not support the human influx. The parish should reject the idea, he said, “so the people of my district can sleep at night”. He added: “What would we do with 1,500 people out there in trailer houses? We don’t have the teachers, we don’t have the classrooms, we don’t have law enforcement, the sheriff doesn’t have the resources.”
Unfortunately a person has to look hard to read between the allegations of racism to find the real reason. They have ONE police officer in the entire town. People can say what they want about trouble not following, but it is here in Monroe. The local officials here are doing all they can to keep it under wraps, but Monroe PD is working extra hours due to some of the goings on.
The proposal was going to be federally funded. I venture to guess they could have found a way to make it work if they wanted. Something tells me that a few troops/officers of the peace could have been rounded up for security, if that was really their concern.
Besides, you know what, nobody said this was going to be easy. Nobody said that there would not be problems or a few troublemakers. You dont offer to help in a situation like this because you expect to benefit or come out better on the other side. You do it because its the right thing to do.
Its just sad that people are continually using the excuse of a few troublemakers to not help WHERE THEY CAN. This town could have helped, they choose not to. Doesnt matter now because their little town would have had to flee from Rita as it looks now, but still.
Please elaborate on the "goings on" in Monroe. Just checked the Monroe Fish-wrapper online and I cant seem to find anything.
That is the damn british for you, them libs have had a shit-eating grin since this began. They ridiculed our federal government's response. We arent near as socialist as they are. Individuals arent supposed to depend on the government to do everything for them (not excusing the slow reaction to the situation, but there is much difference between the fed power of the US and the UK). They have been looking for things to put down the US about, and quite frankly I could give two shits what those bunch of yuppies think. They areacross the pond, and we are here. Yall keep having yalls "free" healthcare at 33% of the working man's check, and I will continue to earn my healthcare. I dont care what a bunch of quasi-socialist or whatever you classify britain as think.
Alta, I dont think asking small communities to take in people is a good idea. They dont have jobs to offer, and they dont have the infrastructure to suck people up, like bigger cities do. Of course, I would be willing to bet that many of the displaced could care less about a job. I know that is how it is in Alexandria. Anyway, they need to move people into growing economies, not Podunk, USA where there is one store, one school, and one gas station. A terrible idea. Make the displaced earn their keep while they are in town, this isnt time for handout and powdering behinds. Many cities will be burdened heavily if they dont make these people carry their load.
while i am sure that estherwood has her fair share of racists (and i'm sure that it isn't a non-factor), this area does not have the means to support this number of people. major social changes would have to be made to make something like this work...there are better places than this that can provide adequate supplies and protection for the evacuees and citizens.
Exactly, sik-m put it much more kosher than I did, but we are in total agreeance. You cant take a struggled economy and add people, the town will simply be overwhelmed.Originally Posted by sik-m-boi

My comments were not meant as a defense of the town as much as a pan of the column. These media folks take their personal agenda and twist a story to enrage readers and listeners. Obviously you were offended by the facts presented. I think there is much more to the story than was printed and the excerpt I took out probably is much closer to the truth than race being an issue.
