Global Warning Part 3 and Wilma..

Yesterday around this time Wilma was a dinky little Tropical Storm. Right now she is a Cat 5 with 175 mph winds and the lowest barometric pressure ever recorded on earth.

Hmmm? cant have anything to do with Global Warming and record Oceanic Heat Content, could it? Nah.

    Get real people.

Minor correction. There have been 9 or 10 WPAC Typhoons with lower pressures. This is the lowest barometric pressure in the Atlantic basin beating out Gilbert in 1988 (888) .. Wilma sits at (882) as of this post.

Tip is the worldwide record (870)

Doesn't look good for the Yukatan right now nor Southern Florida.

Actually, it is probably good news for southern Florida that the low pressure was reached this quickly. The wall will collapse soon and the storm should weaken.

Also, I read the discussion at the NOAA site this morning. With the privoso that they are better at predicting direction than they are intensity, there are a lot of things that make the forecasters believe that by the time this storm hit the US, it will be a significantly weaker storm. Also, they are not sure that the record has been broken yet, and they asked the news media not to report it that it was broken. That reading was raw data, and there are some calculations and analysis that remains to be done before it is announce. As usual, the media is in such competition to be the first with the news, none yielded to NOAA's request.

Here is the actual statement made by NOAA:

However...one must be very careful before it is declared a record minimum pressure until a full and detailed calibration of the instruments and calculations is performed. So please do not jump into conclusions yet...be patient.

That was at 5 am. At 8 am the 882 mb barometric pressure was confirmed.

And your right weunice, Wilma has the lowest pressure in Atlantic history, not worldwide. My bad.

You're right. There is an 8:00 a.m. report that the pressure was broken. The newsmedia was reporting it at 5:30 this morning. They ended up being right, but they did jump the gun. It is moot now, but it shows what the media is all about. Being first is more important than being right.

this is a tired discussion. i thought we established on the neverending thread that most hurricane experts say that an active hurricane season is NOT evidence of global warming. and even if it is, nobody is arguing that the earth has not been getting warmer over the last 50 years or so. even if increased hurricane activity is a result of global warming, it says nothing about the cause of global warming.

Just to clarify I have never said that an "active" season is a result on GW. Indeed, even GW theorists say that GW results in larger and more powerful hurricanes, not neccessarily a great frequency of hurricanes.

Oh, and what exactly do you attribute the cause of AGW to be?

It must be the fault of caucasian, working, tax-paying, voting, male citizens (and, of course, George W. Bush).
