Did he boom his two punts or what? Both 52 yards and both were in the air for WAY over 4 seconds, maybe closer to 5 sec. Perhaps he has started to "turn the corner".

We are going to need him to do the same against Boise and Fresno.

Even though Boise lost Chris Carr to the NFL they are still averaging 9 yards a punt return. Not world beating on paper but their three return guys (Jones, Smith, and Marks can all absolutely fly.

Fresno? They have 22 punt returns for 526 yards and 4 TD's! That is an absurd 23.91 yards a return! For comparision, we are only averaging 4.83 a return. Yuk. Come on Williams, you are better than this!

Boise and Fresno are also in the top 20 in kickoff returns, as are we (Tech is now 12th in the nation averaging a little more than 25 yards a return). In fact, Patrick Jackson is 9th in the country averaging 28.6 per kickoff return. PJ almost took one back against Idaho, it looked somebody barily tripped him up or perhaps he tripped on his own. Dont know but Nov 26th would be a great day for him to end the 200 year Kickoff return drought.

We didnt look good AT ALL on kick coverage Saturday. We will need to outplay Boise and Fresno on special teams to win, in my opinion. Special teams will be a factor in both games, that Im pretty sure of.

Ture that... he has done a pretty good job this year. What ever happened to Holland being the gunner on punts and making nearly every tackle on punts early in the year? Also our returns have stunk because they don't run North and South, they do alot of DANCING!!!! ARGH I yell at them EVERYTIME. Why can't we get someone back there who will actually run FORWARD with the damn ball. Quit trying to make it on SportsCenter by dancing thru and finally breaking one, and just start running them forward and get your team 10 yards to work with. EVENTUALLY your blocking WILL open up a hole and you will score. NO MATTER how much you dance, you MAY only break one for a big gain.... geez

They must have been watching film of maddawg's little friend from West Monroe that used to return punts, or rather catch punts, for us.

Remember that Williams is filling the position for an injured Freddie Franklin. Will Freddie be back for Boise?

i think a certain ammount of dancing has to be done to get any punt return yards on a good punt with decent coverage. what aggrivates me is when our kickoff returners cut outside before they break through the initial wave. we have big returns almost every time they patiently follow the wedge.

All dancing does is allow the coverage to catch up to you. Unless you are one of those Miami freaks that seems to break one every other week... either way it's a bad technique.

Or Corey Brazil not quite as often. Good return men do the dancing because they can. Mediocre and bad guys copy that because they think it helps and it doesn't.

you cannot get any punt return yards without dancing unless the punt was very low and/or deep. if the coverage is there when the ball is caught, you have three options:
    1. call fair catch
    2. dance and try to beat the first man down, then run up field where your teammates are hopefully blocking for you
    3. dive forward for 5 yards.

if your blockers all went in to block the kick, then you definitely don't have a chance to get anywhere without a little fancy footwork.

Even when the coverage is not there, they dance... maybe it would more accurate to say that they look like they are slalom (sp?) skiing. Jump left, jump right, jump left, oh wow.... 6 defenders in your face. In my opinion there is a BIG difference between dancing and making a move/cut. You bring up valid points.... for 118 teams in Division 1-A football..... but we don't make fancy footwork, we stand in one spot moving left and right. These players and special teams coach have to realize that if you catch the ball on the 25 yard line and run 30 yards east or west... your still on the 25 yard line.

Bottom line is that we are 109th out of 117 teams in punt return average. And this isnt the first year we have performed so poorly in this area, we have been ranked below 100 for the last 3 years, at least. So, whatever the problem may be, there is no denying that there is a problem!

Alta, give Tramon a chance. He just about broke one against Idaho. I think he's due for a good one before the season ends.

I would not like to see us lose our best cornerback in a return. I say put Weldon back there.

unfortunately, i have only witnessed 4 games this year with my eyes. what i saw was a punt returner trying to make moves when there was nothing there. it seems to me the problem is blocking, not the returner. my first guess would be that we have been going for the punt block, but we have not blocked one yet, so i certainly hope that's not the case.
