butler's full-time job is with the local fca, and from my understanding he does a tremendous job in that arena.
as for why butler took the job, he's a coach. perhaps he felt like he could handle the challenge of teaching tennis at the college level. perhaps he was wrong.

the original story went that he was hired parttime to work fca and parttime tennis. A way for him to have a job he liked, another to add extra money and be here with his wife. he has simply admitted he does not have enough time he is willing to give to actually coach. Check the website over the last months and see the pitiful efforts at media info and you get a solid picture at what effort has been put into the rest of the coaching job. How much time does it take to report a score over the phone like the rest of the tennis coaches in America. How much time does it take to type a schedule or roster and turn it in to the web site? Not one piece of info put on the web the first semester. The proof here has all to do with effort(time). We might not be able to judge exact coaching abilities here, although someone who cared would not have even looked at this coaches' resume. Oates and Butler ought to show a little pride in doing their job. Louisiana Tech deserves better than these efforts.
man....i was starting to wonder if anyone noticed that we have a tennis team. I'm actually impressed that you guys know this much about it. In short you guys are right....the program is ridiculous. The atheletic dept is putting almost NOTHING into it to help either. The only reason we still have a tennis team i believe is bc of title 9, because the school really does the bare min. for it to survive. Its a shame when Northwestern State U calls us and tells us it wont come back here to play us again because our courts are in such bad shape that they are scared that their players might get hurt. We actually play our home matches at the Ruston High Courts now. Its really a shame bc weve had some players with some real potential come through here in the last few years and they had to watch Jim Oakes walk by every one of their matches on his way over the the baseball game without so much as glancing over. They dont even have enough players to play the matches now that the number 6 quit the team . I think that we should just stop the bleeding and cut the program altogether. I dont want to and i love tennis, but its better that embarrassing ourselves to all the other schools.
You may have news. Did somebody quit other than Westbrook? No. 6 is the girl from Arkansas, isn't she? Did she quit?
What is your opinion of the "volunteer" assistant?

Nothing will get them moving on this one. The tennis team has drawn the ire of JO and he will beat it to the near point of death but not cut it due to title IX.
This isn't the first time the have had a player shortage if they are short. When my wife played at Tech they more than one walk on to save the season, my wife included.
I'm curious, do we offer scholarships to tennis players?
I'm not a big JO fan, but in his defense I must say TitleIX is becoming, or should I say, has become a royal pain in the ass for all universities. I can assure you, this is not what the the Title IX proponents had envisioned. Schools like Tech will continue to struggle to support sports like this and if you factor in Katrina budget cuts it's damn near impossible to make it work.
i believe this was oakes plan all along. cut the tennis team to start up women's golf. it should happen within the next couple of years.Originally Posted by jlamb

I think DFM's famous ticket sales bonus for all coaches would help to relieve some of this pressure. All we need is a successful football team, and the rest of the programs can ride the tide. Give coaches incentives for season ticket sales, and you'll see the football program start to post a profit. Until then, we're gonna continue to struggle to field every team we have, including football.
Why would he need to cut tennis to start up women's golf? Is it only a budgeting problem, or is there some other reason to cap the number of women's teams?Originally Posted by theprofessor
I've been wondering why we don't have a women's golf team. With a men's team already in place, it doesn't seem like it would be that much more expensive to support a women's team. But what do I know...
I too love tennis, but hate the way Oakes has handled this. If he wants to cut tennis, just say so and start a golf team. We all can accept this. In the meantime, he needs to quit allowing coaches to recruit good players and then destroy their careers by hiring a new coach who has no idea how to coach them.Originally Posted by theprofessor
Should have no problem starting a girls team since we get to play for free on one of the top courses in America. BTW, I was told the golf team budget was in the neighborhood of 12K.
