    Shreveport Mayoral Race

I'm voting for Ed Bradley. I was at an SBA function where he was a speaker and after the speech a couple of black "community leaders" were berating him for having moved into a nice, gated, predominantly white neighborhood and "forgetting" where he came from. I heard him reply, "I will never apologize for being successful." That's the kind of leader we need, someone who is for small business and doesn't bow down to big money or play the race card. He is truly a man who came from nothing and built his success upon education and morality.

I think that Jerry Jones is the best candidate for Shreveport. We need to get the corruption out of office, not bring it back in. Just because someone says something that sounds good doesnt say anything about what they can do for Shreveport. Have you ever listened to Ed Bradley's editorials after the news on Channel 12 (i think)???? That is not someone I want to be my mayor.

    Re: Shreveport Mayoral Race

I'm voting for JERRY JONES!! He is a great man, a deacon at my church and his son was on Byrd's swim team with me. He has been the city's attourney for many years now. If he becomes mayor Keith Hightower will not get away with his scandelous reign as mayor. I believe this mayoral election will have even larger implications as in the successor of US Representative Jim McCrery. That position is next on Hightower's list, and McCrery will not allow it. I believe he will hold the position for a few more years so he can endorse JERRY JONES to take over his position if Jones wins the mayoral race. What has Ed Bradley been doing as of late? Nothing. I can't stand how he talks pausing 3 seconds in between each word. Watch out for the female Arlena Acree though. She will garner up a lot of the female vote. She is Republican in name, but not in action. And you can expect Ed Bradley to bring in a lot of the black vote. But JERRY JONES is the man for the job!!

Ed Bradly? Please say it ain't so Marketdawg! I may have thought about it if he had never done those editorials. (the man can't even speak correctly)

I was happy to hear Cedric Glover enter the race. (so that Ed wouldn't run away with this election) Did you hear the reason Glover gave for entering? Something about the "black canidates or trying to use the race card" and he "wants to show that a black man can run a clean race" (note to Cedric. if you have to use the words "black _____" in every sentence YOU are using the race card.):bigcry:

Personaly I have not made up my mind who I will vote for yet. But I know I won't be voting for Ed or Cedric.

I speak with a strong southern accent...one of my speech professors in college made me go to the speech lab to try to lose some of my accent so that I would score higher on my last speech final. I resent that to this day. My drawl is part of my character as is Ed's speech part of his character. If you listen to his words he really is an intelligent and caring man.

Flyers cause tension in Shreveport mayor's race

    Video High
Racial politics are in play in the Shreveport mayor's race. A flyer distributed in mostly black sections of town says it's from the so-called "Rent-A-Negro Center."

It lists first names of prominent African-Americans who've shown up in support of white candidates Jerry Jones and Arlena Acree at their campaign events.

There've also been paid commentaries in the weekly Shreveport Sun newspaper that also list first names of African-Americans who've supported whites in the past. The commentaries accuse them of "selling out."

The flyer was distributed at least in part by a supporter of candidate Ed Bradley. But Bradley denied having anything to do with the flyer when he was confronted by Caddo Parish Commissioner Stephanie Lynch, who's one of those named on the flyer.

Whether or not Ed Bradley had anything to do with this or not, do we really want these kind of issues surrounding the mayor coming in? We dont need racial battles and we dont need racial sympathy votes. We need a strong mayor who can represent everyone and do what is best to get this city going again. Look at Bossier...Shreveport could have had Bass Pro, Shreveport could have had the Century Tel Center, Shreveport could have had the Boardwalk....but what do we have??? NOTHING. Thanks Keith Hightower. We dont need a mayor that is going to come in with racial tensions and controversy...We dont need a mayor thats going to come in and support one race over another....We need an objective man who will further the city and the people of Shreveport. We need a man strong in his beliefs who will be able to rise to the occasion. The man for the job is Jerry Jones.

You are right on all of those things but the problem started way before Hightower came to office.
    Example 1.
Originaly Sheveport only wanted one casino on there side of the river because of the "eye sore" that wil be there when they leave. So for years Bossier had three to Shreveport's one.
    Example 2.
Louisiana Downs originaly wanted to be in Shreveport. Shreveport said "no" and The Downs went across the river also.
    Example 3.
American Airlines wanted to put a central "hub" in Shreveport. Shreveport said "no" and AA went to the Dallas/Forthworth area. (DFW)

I know. "damned if you do, damned if you don't." The difference here is the airline industry and the gambling industry thought these things would work here. And the hotel industry thinks it won't.

You left out the welding company Shreveport rigged out the port building for (they pulled out before they even sent their staff here), Bass Pro Shops (they wanted all of South Park Mall but Shreveport wouldn't cut a deal with them), the giant toaster bridge that still doesn't work correctly, Delta Air Cargo pulling out of Shreveport Regional, Super Safe Weekend, and the Shreveport Riverfront that went to outlaws and punks because the city wouldn't patrol and enforce thoroughly and the little known fact of the Shreveport Regional Remodel going over budget by almost double because Shreveport awarded the survey/engineering project to an underqualified firm because it was a minority company.

    Re: Shreveport Mayoral Race

I don't think Ruston would want a race track and casinos in town either. Bossier was sin city back in the 50s with go-go dancers on stages with short skirts and blues bars and drinking allowed at age 18 while shreveport had a limit of 21.

There were riverfront kids in shreveport schools. They lived in what were really temporary shacks back then. There was no entertainment district by the river then.
I avoided being cut in the first grade because I had seen the cowboy movies and such where the way to take a knife away from someone was shown now and then. I didn't know the term redneck back then but the riverfront kids fit the bill.

Fortunately, they were in school and teachers made everyone learn back then; so their poverty didn't prevent them from later success. I suspect that, when the riverwalk or whatever was developed, a lot of those people became truly homeless, of course, because those shanties were "unsightly."

And all that was before integration. I hope the city is coming into the 20th century now that the 21st has arrived.

What would be the value of a Bass Pro Shop in the city? In Little Rock, Bass Pro Shop is about to build in a small wetland area near the Interstate 30/40 intersection because the corps of engineers doesn't enforce the water-quality rules it is supposed to and because Bass Pro Shop ownership doesn't apparently recognize that no business that owes its success to outdoorsmen should be doing the kind of thing that every outdoorsman should stand against!

Is this the same Jerry Jones that was a Sigma Nu at Tech back in the late 70's?
