    Classy message from SLC

My memory's a bit sketchy, but does anyone remember our old league being this gracious when we left?

    From the News-Star:

Southland says thanks, and good luck

As many of your readers know, the University of Louisiana at Monroe will end its near quarter-century relationship with the Southland Conference in the coming weeks, when at the same time, it assumes full membership in the Sun Belt Conference.
It's no secret that ULM athletics has been a large part of the successful history of the Southland Conference since the university joined the league in 1982. At the same time, the Southland Conference has reciprocated by providing the institution with many of the finest athletic moments in school history.

On behalf of the Southland Conference and its membership, I would like to thank everyone who's ever been involved with ULM athletics during its league tenure. That begins at the top with the previous leadership of Presidents Dwight Vines and Lawson Swearingen, and now, under the dynamic management of President Jim Cofer. There can be little athletic success without the proper direction and support of effective presidential control.

There are many, many others to salute and thank for their contributions to the Southland Conference, and we offer our sincere appreciation. Great friends, administrators, coaches and student-athletes such as Benny Hollis, Bruce Hanks, Lou St. Amant, Mona Martin, Pat Collins, Linda Harper, Frank Hoffman, Chuck Finley, Ben Sheets, Lauri (Young) Mondschein, Lisa Ingram, Arthur Hayes, Terry Martin, Wojciech Myrda and Breaux Greer have all provided our league with great accomplishments and memorable moments.

And, of course, ULM legends Mike Vining, Bob Groseclose, Bob "The Dean" Anderson, and E.J. (Lee) Ok, are all appropriately enshrined in the Southland Conference Hall of Honor.

We again thank ULM athletics for the great memories, and we wish the absolute best to everyone within the ULM community as the institution transitions into the Sun Belt Conference.

Tom Burnett is commissioner of the Southland Conference.

Look at who the commissioner is and who wrote the article. Tom Burnett is a LaTech grad and I worked with him in the Sports Info office. He is simply a good guy and class act.

Maybe it's because the SLC is happy to get rid of them and they are being replaced by a better school in Central Arkansas.

I remember sitting next to Burnett during our summer commencement, he told me had no idea what he was going to do. I think he's found his niche. :icon_wink

    Huh? Copycat move in News-Star?

Sun Belt welcomes ULM to full membership

We want to let you and your fans know how excited we are that the University of Louisiana at Monroe will become an all-sports member of the Sun Belt Conference on July 1.

We feel this will benefit our conference tremendously while also enhancing ULM. We have much admiration and respect for your previous accomplishments in the Southland Conference. Your athletic successes coupled with the facility upgrades and expansion on your campus make you a perfect fit for the Sun Belt Conference and will enhance our current membership.

We recently celebrated our conference's 30th anniversary, a three-decade period of tremendous team and individual successes in each of our 19 sports. We have improved in many ways in recent years and are positioned to have continued success.

As a Division 1-A football conference, we have a permanent seat on the NCAA's 16-member Board of Directors, which gives us a crucial voice on some of the most pressing issues in college athletics. We had more national and regional television exposure in 2005-2006 than at any time in our history, and we also were the only conference in the nation to provide video highlights and features from each of our respective championships on www.sunbeltsports.org. We are equally proud of our achievements off the field of play, as 12 of our schools are graduating their student athletes at a rate higher than their student body.
Our ambition as we enter our 31st season is to have greater consistency and become a top 10 league in each sport, and we feel your addition will help us to achieve that. We have seen you achieve success first-hand in football and look forward to you being able to compete in the Sun Belt Conference in all of your sports.
There is currently an enormous level of unity and support among our member institutions, and this attitude coupled with our successes in the classroom and on the field of play, gives us much confidence. We look forward to having you join and help us in meeting the challenges ahead. Welcome aboard!

WRIGHT WATERS is the Sun Belt commissioner.
