    Nuclear Jihad

Excellent program on Discovery channel last night entitled "Nuclear Jihad". If you ever have a chance to watch it would be worth your time Dr. A.Q. Khan singlehandedly created Pakistan's nuclear bomb and sent the same technology to N. Korea, Iran, Libya, and who knows where else. Seems one doesn't need a nuclear reactor to manufacture enriched uranium. China gave away a simple blueprint for bomb making 20 years ago.

    Real scary stuff.

Yes it is scary! Scary enough to act on given intelligence (the best we have) to prevent another non-friendly foreign power rubbing shoulders with terrorists form gaining a mass destruction capability? Think about it Salty!

If you talking about Iraq, you are way off base.. The intelligence was cooked to match policy.

    Re: Nuclear Jihad

Of course it was, but you just said...

same technology to N. Korea, Iran, Libya, and who knows where else.

You should have said that we did know for certain that it hadn't been sent to Iraq.

Mad, in the early 2000's we didn't even know about Dr. Khan's private nuclear supply network. But yes, with all the sanctions against Iraq at the time plus our huge intelligence focus on that country we knew that Iraq wasn't working on the Bomb. BTW, it looks like N. Korea agree to US demands to stop work on its plutonium production system in 1999 because it had hooked up with Dr. Khan and didn't need the plutonium any longer.

So when did you, the Discovery Channel, and the CIA discover his network?

I discovered it two nights ago. The Discovery Channel I would guess did the segment about 6 months ago. I remember it being on the news about a year or so ago but didn't pay much attention to it.

Who knows when the CIA figured it out. They knew about Dr. Khan in the early 90's but lost track of him.

I'll see If I can find a summary of his nuclear network later this afternoon.

Well you've already stated that we ( I assume that means anybody related to the US Government) didn't know about this in the "early 2000s". So I'm guessing you are privy to CIA information that would have surely been shared with the media had they known about this. Right?

Newsflash! Just because the NYT and Congress doesn't know about it, doesn't mean "we" don't know.

mad, here is a good summary of the activities of Dr. Khan.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdul_Qadeer_Khan

Apparently, he offered the nuclear "goodies" to Saddam in 1996 but he turned Dr. Khan down thinking it was a "sting" operation..

When the inspectors went back to Iraq at the end of 2002, they found zip. All the places that Sec. Powell said were connected to WMD had long been abandoned. The inspectors asked the US for additional WMD sites and none were provided.

There is a big difference in going to war because Iraq had WMD as opposed to going to war because Iraq might have WMD.
