    Techster soccer conference opener

Techster soccer opens WAC play at home Sunday at the Joe at noon vs. Utah State. This is a big game for the Techsters because out of the 8 teams in the WAC that play soccer the top 6 will go to the conference tourney. The Techsters will be looking for their first ever win in the WAC after joining the WAC last year and going 0-7 in their inaugural year.

Here's the conference webiste for schedules and standings

The Louisiana Tech Lady Techster soccer lost their conference opener 2-1 to Utah St. at home today, but they made some history. Denise Wilson scored the Techsters' first conference goal since they joined the WAC last year. They went 0-7 last year and were held scoreless in every game.

Congrats to Denise Wilson as she scored on a 35-yard screamer that hit the right upper 90 of the goal in the last minute of the game. The Techsters have gotten that monkey off their back, now it's time to get their first conference win and hopefully get to the conference tourney!

35 yd shot in the last minute or last seconds? Sound like the other team quit and that was a last second blast. It's the other teams fault for not playing it out, but the pro's rarely ever crack shots 35 and out with the true intent of scoring. It happens. To me the keeper thought this things done and slept. Congrats to the girls though for scoring.

The game story said 25 seconds, but it seemed like they had 35 or 40 seconds left in the game. It wasn't a last second blast that just beat the clock as the team was starting to leave the field, it was a legit shot. The keeper was off her line and Wilson placed it perfectly in the right upper 90. Unfortunatly I couldn't find anyone that recorded the game, but if someone has a tape of the game or that shot that would be great.

The Techsters have a brutal road trip this weekend. First they fly to Hawaii Thursday and play Friday, then they fly to California to face San Jose State on Sunday. Tech will be fortunate to get one point on this road trip (tie one of the matches), especially with the lack of depth. I'm sure Hawaii remembers last year's match where their star player Natasha Kai (who now plays for the U.S. national team) was injured by the Techster goalkeeper. It was a 50/50 ball and the Tech keeper came off her line and when they collided Kai flipped in the air and landed on her head.

That close to the end players get sloppy. You see it all the time. Glad she scored, but 35 yards out is not something any keeper should be beat on. Not at the level this game was played at anyway.
