High school back scores 10 TDs, team still loses

LEPANTO, Ark. -- Kendric Smith scored 10 touchdowns, on runs ranging from 1 to 54 yards, and it still wasn't enough for Hughes High School.
Smith broke the state record for touchdowns in a game, the last coming in overtime, but Hughes lost 73-72 Friday night to East Poinsett County. He also scored on runs of 13, 20, 28, 35, 40, 45, 52 and 53 yards while breaking the Arkansas record of eight touchdowns in a game set by Alvin Bell of Little Rock in 1919 and matched by Chris James of Osceola in 2003.
Quarterback Brett Hardin had 835 all-purpose yards for East Poinsett County in the meeting of previously winless teams.
East Poinsett County (1-6) and Hughes (0-5) were tied 66-66 at the end of regulation. Hughes scored first in overtime on a 1-yard run by Smith, but missed on a two-point conversion. East Poinsett County responded with a 2-yard touchdown run by Hardin and won the game on an extra point by Joseph Peridore.

Does anyone know anything about this RB? Is he that good or was this some kind of fluke?

If he's that good, hopefully our coaches know about him.

Our coaches do not recruit Ark. at all, not even Junction City or Eldorado. We haven't had a high school player from Ark, since Joe Raymond Peace's years. I did everything I possibly could to get them to recruit a player out of Junction City about 3 years ago but they would not even take a look at him. He was the nephew of a former Tech team captain and really wanted to come to Tech. He's started at LB the last 2 years for Ark. state.

Makes no sense. We've gotten a lot of mileage out of Arkansas girls in basketball!

Pursuit of Record Brings Sportsmanship Into Question

Coach Decides to Go for It Despite Lopsided Score

Dave Hunt coaches football players so humiliated that they dread walking through the halls of Burch High School in West Virginia. Two of them thought about quitting last week. The rest considered starting a fight. "They want to get even," Hunt said, "because what happened to them is so unfair."

    ....
In a 64-0 win over Burch last week, Matewan running back Paul McCoy made a calculated assault on the national high school record for rushing yards in a game, amassing 658 yards and 10 touchdowns. McCoy and his coaches thought it would be fun for a small kid from a small school near the border of Kentucky and West Virginia to own the official, single-game rushing record.
